This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Intel. That said, I promise to give the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when telling you about this product. (Internet, please, like I’d try and convince you to buy stuff I didn’t like myself.) So here’s my disclaimer: yes, I got sent this thing for free and I’m getting a little bit of money to tell you what I thought about it, but I would never, ever pretend I dug it when I didn’t. Cross my heart and swear to Jordan Catalano.

When I first got the email asking me if I’d like to review the Viliv X70EX I forwarded it straight to Sean. “This gadget looks cool,” I wrote. “But I have no idea what it is.” Sean wrote me back so fast that he must have got whiplash doing it. “THAT IS THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER,” he said. And then he sent me a link to some videos on Amazon---where I also discovered that the Viliv X70EX costs $599+, and anything that costs $599+ has got to be fairly impressive---and although I dutifully watched these videos, I’ve got to tell you, I still wasn’t a hundred percent clear on what the Viliv X70EX actually was. I mean, I was maybe, like, seventy four percent sure. And a half.

It wasn’t until the Viliv X70EX actually arrived on my doorstep and I unwrapped the box that I had a better picture of what it supposed to do. I’m not exactly a technology whiz, in case you haven’t noticed---I can pretty much turn my computer on, but all bets are off after that; I mean, once I unplugged the router to get the Internet working again in our house and just about bought myself a bottle of champagne to celebrate---so the Villiv X70EX was kind of mystifying to me, at least until I started playing around with it.

And then I figured out what it is: it’s basically like a very, very small laptop---smaller than a paperback book---but without a cover or a keyboard. Is this making sense? Well, how about this: it’s sort of like an iPhone if your iPhone worked out over the summer and got a little bit heftier, and also started hanging with a different crowd and running Windows instead of being a tiny Mac. Basically, you can take the Viliv X70EX anywhere and do lots of awesome Internetty things on it. I like doing awesome Internetty things. I also like going places. This boded well for my relationship with the Viliv X70EX. It seemed like maybe we were going to get along.

viliv x70

Here are some basics about this awesome little gadget, in case you were wondering: it's only 7 inches long and a little less than an inch thick. It has a touch screen, which is pretty cool, as well as a built-in GPS navigation system and a webcam. It has “full PC capability,” which means you can pretty much do anything on it that you can do on a normal PC (like type something up in Word, for example.) And since its formal title is a “mobile internet device,” you can get on—or, you know, wherever you spend the majority of your time, no judgments here---wherever you can find an Internet connection.

In short, this thing is like a tiny little baby computer! I want to tickle it under its chin and ask it whoooooo’s a cute little mobile internet device, who, who, who?

It also has something called the Intel® Atom™ processor which, the marketing blurb assures me, “has been designed to be smaller and more power efficient, enabling you to get devices with full PC functionality that can fit into your purse or pocket.” While I’m not sure this thing would be slim enough for me to put in my pocket, per se---at least not without making a half dozen “is that a Viliv X70EX or are you just happy to see me?” jokes first---I definitely had no qualms about tossing it straight into my purse. It took up far less room than my ridiculously overstuffed Moleskine day planner and probably weighed less too.

And this, you see, is how I ended up carrying the Viliv X70EX with me on a recent trip to Mexico City. Hey, I thought, I’m mobile. This thing is mobile. Let’s see how mobile we can be together.

Yeah, we were pretty mobile together. It was pretty awesome. In the space of four days, I watched a movie on this bad boy on the plane (after downloading it from iTunes in advance), Skyped with Sean from afar thanks to the handy built-in webcam, updated my Twitter and Facebook statuses, stored a few pictures from my camera’s memory card on it and then sent them to Sean to show off my fancy hotel room, downloaded a book from Amazon and read it using the free Kindle for PC app, and checked both my work and personal email accounts about fourteen hundred times. Not bad for something I didn’t really understand about a week ago.

For typing and clicking around, the Viliv X70EX comes with a built-in stylus that snaps neatly into the top when you’re not using it, and it’s way less annoying that you might think it would be (and much easier than just using your index finger, text message-style.) My Mac snob husband said the video quality wasn’t the best he’s ever seen, but then again he’s my Mac snob husband, and it seemed pretty passable to me. The device kept a charge for a decent amount of time and really, it did so much and made my travels so much easier, that I’d be hard-pressed to find too many things I didn’t like about it.

(I mean, sure, it would be great if there were a button that automatically puts it into standby when you’re done using it---rather than going to the Start menu, clicking “shut down,” and then putting it in standby mode, which was sort of clunky—but that’s really a fairly minor complaint, and you know what, maybe I just need to stop being so damn lazy. There are three buttons to push instead of one! My god! The sky is falling! etc etc etc.)

Anyway, now comes the fun part. Would you like your own super awesome teeny-tiny mobile internet device?

Because guess what? I've got one to give away! Yep, you can win your very own Viliv X70EX---did I tell you these things cost $599+? That's a pretty generous holiday present to yourself—by answering a simple question.  How would this mobile internet device make your life easier?

Dec 09, 2009

I travel quite a lot, and taking my laptop is getting to be a real problem. I would love to just put this in my purse and go! And, I'm sure in my town of 1200 that I live in, I would finally be the first to have this cool gadget!

Dec 09, 2009

This wonderful little baby computer would make my life easier in many ways! I could get updates from family and friends much sooner! I would have my own files wherever I am in the city (or out of the city, if I was road-tripping)! I could smirk to my boyfriend that "he *only* has an iPhone!

Dec 09, 2009

This gadget would be awesome to receive in my stocking this year.

I am a Graphic Design student and I feel like this could really enhance my potential for working outside of the home. Also when I get back to school in the spring to be able to take notes on it in class would be priceless!

Thanks for letting me submit to this contest!

Dec 09, 2009

This would be so much nicer than lugging my old outdated laptop around!! I would use it for everything!! So cool!!!!

Dec 09, 2009

this seriously awesome. I adore my iphone especially for travels, but there is only so much my little eyes can take, and this seems to be like the iphone on STEROIDS. Love it! I travel quite a bit these days, and I'd love to have a handy little device to keep me company and to download my gazillion pics on! I love that you can use it for a kindle. OMG OMG OMG, pick me!

Dec 09, 2009

I would share this awesome piece of technology with my husband who is going to start chiropractic school next semester. He can take this baby to class and feel like such a smarty pants!

Dec 09, 2009

This is so cute and a great stocking stuffer.

jennifer m
Dec 09, 2009

i would definitely give it to my gadget-loving 22 year old brother! he would then owe me mega-points for a future bday or xmas gift!

Dec 09, 2009

My wife would just love this.

Dec 09, 2009

Wow! This gadget is awesome - I would love to have this to throw in my purse!

Dec 09, 2009

I am going to be doing a fair amount of travel in 2010 and this would be way easier than my old, heavy laptop!

Dec 09, 2009

hello! this would make my life easier becuase next year i am moving across the country to train to be a pediatric ICU doctor. i could use it during the day for medical-related stuff (looking up doses and research articles) and use it other times to do things like, you know, facebook and read blogs, to stay connected during my 80+ hour/week work weeks! wow, i really need this!

Elizabeth Craig
Dec 09, 2009

This would make my life easier because it would make my nerdy husband OH so happy, henceforth making me happy too...

Chris Pugh
Dec 09, 2009

I can't believe you have one of these to give away! I struggle with a rather large laptop through airports and traveling. I only use the device to remote back into my computer at work most of the time - or get on line for some other project. This would be AWESOME for MANY work and personal reasons. And, yes, it would make my life MUCH easier!

Chris (in Virginia)

Dec 09, 2009

I would love this! I would use this for travelling rather than lugging around my larger laptop which would make things so much easier (and less heavy!!).

jennifer in sf
Dec 09, 2009

It would make my life easier because a) it would cut way down on the amount of actual books I have to buy (which would cut down on books taking over my whole apartment), and b) omg it would be so awesome for traveling! Plus tiny electronics are just so cute.

Dec 09, 2009

this nifty gadget would make life easier for the entire family as we currently use an old desktop in a remote part of the house. although the arguing amongst family members about whose turn it is to use it might actually make things more difficult....nah, still want it!

Dec 09, 2009

This would be fantastic for the days when I'm traveling with my husband and want to be able to work without hauling out my big ol' laptop, which is lovely and mostly mobile, but HEAVY. I mean, with this, I could carry, like, a small dog around, too. Maybe you should also give away a dog! Woo!

Dec 09, 2009

This would be great! In May, I moved literally across the country. The day before I moved, my computer crashed. I have yet to replace it. For real.

Dec 09, 2009

This would make me ditch my laptop and decide against getting an iphone. I love my little cell phone but I really need the mobile web connectivity. Thanks for having this contest!

Dec 09, 2009

Super deluxe giveaway! yay.

Unlike the rest of the world, I don't own a Crackberry. So this device would totally rock my world and allow me to keep up with all my cool friends, esp. on Facebook and email.

Hope I win!

Dec 09, 2009

Wow, I need this. Need it for work. My large and unweildy pc just crapped out on me with a fried motherboard. This little baby would make me more efficient at my multiple work sites. Please pick me!

Dec 09, 2009

OMG is right! I have a desktop PC and a dinosaur for a cell phone. Between mobile internet, email, Netflix and Kindle, jeez, I could actually join the 21st century!

Dec 09, 2009

I would LOVE this toy!! I would use it to skype my family that can't be around on Christmas. Oh and for pesky grad school too :)

Dec 09, 2009

Being a student I'm on the go. A LOT. That said, this would make it much easier to get things done while running around. I would love love love to be able to throw my laptop into my purse. Tee!

Katherine Wollner
Dec 09, 2009

OMG, do I ever want to win this! My laptop is thisclose to dying for good and I will be lost-- LOST-- without my internet connection, also known as my sanity and connection to the outside world. I'd love something that I could toss in my purse and take along and would adore that Kindle app and the ability to entertain my toddler for 10 whole consecutive minutes with videos and movies so that I can paint my nails or use the bathroom (ALONE!) in peace.

Dec 09, 2009

This little nugget would make my life so much easier! I'm a poor college student and this beast of a laptop I'm on right now currently has about 15 minutes of battery life. Not good when I need to get on facebook in class :)...but really.

Dec 09, 2009

I do a lot of traveling about the Bay Area for work, school, friends, etc. On an average week I cover from Mountain View over to Fremont, up to Berkeley, and across to San Francisco... So I would use this excellent little gadget en route to other places, in lieu of my lovely (but very large and unwieldy) PC.

Dec 09, 2009

Whoa. I want one! This would be so helpful when I'm out in the field for my job. Also, I don't own any hip little electronic devices - no i phone, no blackberry, no wii - just a laptop and an old cell phone that recently stopped ringing.

Dec 09, 2009

I'm planning my wedding right now, so having a tiny, portable laptop-iPhone hybrid to bring with me everywhere would be amazing!

Dec 09, 2009

This would make my life so much easier since I'm currently in law school and need something light and easy to carry everywhere, to take notes on and study, when I'm not reading this blog.

Dec 09, 2009

This would enable me to check my email when my husband is home and hogging the computer!

Amy Krause
Dec 09, 2009

I know this is totally a first world problem, but I have a hard time pulling out the big laptop with a baby at home. You'd think it would be easy: pull out of case, plug in, turn on, type with two hands. Yeah, not so much with a six month old. As a matter of fact, the only reason I'm able to type this comment is because she's having a very rare moment of not flailing. She definitely wants me to win this thing. It would make checking email, doing internetish things much easier. :)

Dec 09, 2009

I would reluctantly (but gladly) give this to my husband. It would completely change his workday and make him a happier man! :)

Dec 09, 2009

Wow, that looks pretty awesome. This gadget would make my life easier by allowing me to write. I get little snatches of free time here and there when my kids aren't around and I'd love to use that time to write, but I don't want to lug my laptop around with me all the time. This little baby would fit in my purse and then I could actually write instead of just dreaming about it. (Yes, I know I could use pen and paper, but HOW SLOW.)

Dec 09, 2009

How would the Viliv X70EX make life easier? I suffer from a rare* disease called Need To Know Right Now.

NTKRN causes an insatiable compulsion to learn answers to questions the moment they arise in the course. Was that lame Canadian reggae song Informer released in 1992 or 1994? Was that guest star on the last Glee the same dude who plays Kripke on Big Bang Theory? OMG I Need To Know Right Now! Having the interwebs at my fingertips will answer this need and whatever random question has popped in my head.

*And totally made up, just now, by me.

Dec 09, 2009

This would be awesome purely for the GPS capabilities. I don't have a fancy "smart phone" like everyone else on the planet, so this would up my coolness quotient.

Dec 09, 2009

WHAT?!? I could Skype, Internet, Facebook, watch Netflix movies, Twitter, work (okay, that part ugh), read my Kindle books, not get lost with GPS, transfer photos, all in one neat little package, all on the go?!? The prospects of using it while traveling are making me plotz.

Dec 09, 2009

Wow! This may be a boring response, but as a teacher this little guy would make my life very easy. I get kicked out of my room during my plan block, but having this would let me go work elsewhere in the building and have a computer! Outside of teaching, it would be awesome to never get lost again, and it would be even more awesome to travel with this so I could keep in touch with family and friends while abroad during the summers.

Dec 09, 2009
Dec 09, 2009

Have to have this! Would use it to watch movies, read books, check email/FB, pretty much anything and everything.

Gordon Lanpher
Dec 09, 2009

It would speed up my load times on my ancient computer. I would take with me so I wouldn't have to worry about being on a public computer to check email, facebook etc.

April G.
Dec 09, 2009

This would help me at drunken grad student parties when we're arguing about word etymologies. Do you know how many times I've wished I could get on the OED online at a party? Too many, my friend, way too many. That reminds me...are donkey and monkey related?

Dec 09, 2009

I would use it to watch stuff on Hulu....

Jennifer Strickland
Dec 09, 2009

It would make me the best sister on the planet because I'd give it to my sister for Christmas. And then she'd owe me forever, which would definitely make my life easier!

Dec 09, 2009

It would allow me to give a gift to my boyfriend that he truly needs: a smaller laptop-esque device that would allow him to travel AND continue to work online on his dissertation.

Also, it would please me because I'm an awesome girlfriend and we're planning on graduating together...yes...both with our PhDs in psychology. :)

This would be an awesome gift!

Dec 09, 2009

Oooh!! I could find a bunch of uses for this. The benefit of something like this, besides upping my cool factor, is that it would be super helpful for me to go back to college. Since I work fulltime & have a 6 year old, going back to school for me means that I need to take online classes for awhile. Something like this that is so portable & has such an easy hookup to the internet would really let me squeeze in school work wherever or whenever; I wouldn't have to just wait for after 9pm every night, after the kid is in bed. Plus, it's super cute and there's a kindle app? I would love a kindle but can't currently reason the purchase. This is lots of my wishes all rolled into one!!!

Dec 09, 2009

I want this ... or what a fabulous present for my formerly luddite mom who wants to start emailing.

Dec 09, 2009

As a mom of 3 kids, this gadget would help make my life easier by allowing me to check email and stay connected while shuttling the kids around.

Dec 09, 2009
Dec 09, 2009

It would make my life easier because my laptop is 6 years old and the battery doesn't even hold a charge anymore so I can't use it as a remote device like I want to. Which means ON MY LAP. That and my laptop weighs over 8 freaking pounds.

I'd use it to keep connected to my friends and family who don't live close by (which is almost everyone I know).

Dec 09, 2009

I'm self employed, running a really busy business. But I also volunteer as a computer teacher at a small private school. AND I'm in the process of starting an accessories line (women's and childrens) so I'm super busy and ALWAYS on the go. Being able to stay on top of things with the business, research/demonstrate things in the computer class and monitor things with the accessories line from one small device would be a lifesaver!

Dec 09, 2009

This would make my life easier because I would not have to run upstairs to Google things every time my husband and I disagree about some piece of esoteric TV trivia.

Dec 09, 2009

As a teacher it would be incredible to have a "mini" laptop to transport to and from work. The ability to change lesson plans and research new teaching ideas would be fantastic!

Dec 09, 2009

My desktop computer recently died, and I've been relying on my work laptop for all of my computer stuff, since a personal laptop isn't in the budget right now. Of course, the corporate IT guys have the work laptop set so that I can't download any superfluous programs (geez, the nerve!) so I'm living without iTunes and other similarly important stuff. The Viliv X70EX is exactly what I need to bridge the gap!

How would this mobile internet device make your life easier?

This device would make my life easier because I am a full time student and between school work, an internship, family, and life drama, I would use the most out of it for all of these things. Actually, I would use the shit out of it.

I'm a special education teacher in a low income area in the East Bay. I work with students who have severe behavior disorders as well as autism, mental retardation, and emotional disorders. Many of my students love playing on the computer, listening to music, and watching movies. Often they are allowed to use the computer when they have earned the reward by following class rules, completing work, and just doing a good job at school. We only have ONE computer in the classroom. This computer has been thrown, drawn on, and abused over the years. If my students could earn the Intel Viliv X70EX as a reward (with a trusted staff member to ensure it's survival), my students would work SO HARD to earn it! It would be a huge positive reinforcer for my students. Please help me give my students opportunities that most students in special education never receive!

Dec 09, 2009 more handwriting notes furiously during class and missing what my professor says? Yes yes!

Dec 09, 2009

It looks like a lot more fun then a laptop and since I only have a desktop at work now I could go portable!

Dec 09, 2009

I would love to give this to my Mummy in India. I would feel so much better being able to skype with her when ever she wanted to see me.

Dec 09, 2009

this device would keep all my "I Phone, Crackberry, OMG Latest Technology" friend's lips sealed with envy & jealousy. a great Christmas gift indeed!

Dec 09, 2009

This little gadget would make my life easier by taking the place of my outdated Palm, which I would then turn into a very techno-chic coaster. (Can I saw that? Can things, in fact, BE techie and chic?)

Dec 09, 2009

I'm about to go back to school for my master's, and I'll be spending hours hanging around campus. So yeah, this would make my life a million times easier. Being able to use Microsoft Word is what sold me.

Dec 09, 2009

I could do my work anywhere!

Dec 09, 2009

oooooooooooh! it would make my life easier because my computer is broken and i am moving out on my own now and really need a new one!!!!!

have a great holiday season!

Dec 09, 2009

I am pretty much salivating over this computer! There are about a million and one reasons why this would make my life easier. Mainly, I have a six month old that is about to become mobile. My husband and I currently have laptops (really, really old ones that sometimes work...and sometimes don't!) sitting on our coffee table. The cords are everywhere and I know that once our little guy starts crawling we will have to put them away. It would be unbelievably nice to have this tiny thing to get out whenever I need to catch up on emails, blogs, etc. Thanks for the opportunity to enter!

Dec 09, 2009

Sean was definitely right - AWESOME! I had been thinking about the Kindle lately. in fact, just earlier today I decided against it since it only did ONE thing, If I;mn going to carry something with me, I need it to do multipole things and then I saw you said it had a Kindle reader - sold! And if Jordan Catalano says it's awesome, it must be. thanks for the opportunity Holly!

Dec 09, 2009

what a lovely little device!! My life would be made so much easier by all the productiveness that having a tiny little computer could provide. Plus the added bonus of being able to skype with my lovely sister at much more frequent intervals.

Dec 09, 2009

No matter how I paint this, it's going to sound a bit, well, pathos-ridden, so I apologize if my story is over-the-top seeming. REGARDLESS! I'm a third-year teacher in a rural school district where right now approximately 51% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While we're nowhere NEAR other schools and areas when it comes to lack of resources, our technology is still in great need. On any given day, I have about 25 students per class and about 10 working computers, even for my upper level classes like Advanced Comp and AP Language/Lit. This device would allow me to stay "plugged in" while potentially freeing up another "regular" computer for a student (teachers are expected to stay logged in to a computer somewhere for emergency emails, etc). I'm also currently training as a literacy coach for secondary students and am often of the building, either observing other coaches at the middle school or elementary school, or in professional development in Indianapolis, which is about 20 miles from my classroom. I can also see this being a deft little way to store classroom observations, teacher reflections, and quick action research ideas quickly and confidentially. (Usually that's where the apple-shaped post-its come in.) Thanks for the opportunity!

Dec 09, 2009

I would use it for research! I have a laptop that weighs about 800 pounds so it's not comfortably portable. I'm finishing my PhD in English right now so am at libraries a lot. Thanks!

Dec 09, 2009

This sounds amazing! I would use it to make my sleek Mac using fiance jealous of my cute new toy!

Claire Bidwell Smith
Dec 09, 2009

I want one so I can use it at work and not have all my favorite sites blocked!

Dec 09, 2009

Oh, wow! I love to cook, so I imagine having it in the kitchen with me as I search for recipes or cook from one I found online - way less cumbersome than my laptop.

And at work! Oh, heaven! I work in a different part of the building than my co-workers (I have to exit the building and walk around the back to get to the other offices) - I could just tote this nifty device along with me to take notes or check a referenced e-mail/document during a meeting. Lifesaver! Want!

Annette D
Dec 09, 2009
Dec 09, 2009

I am so in love with this little machine! I want one!

How would it make my life easier? What would I use it for? EVERYTHING! I keep my calendar online - I could take my calendar with me everywhere. My family all lives out of state - I could keep in touch with them all the time. My husband and I are starting small businesses - we could use it to work out details with future clients and research problems and look so super cool while doing it! I'd use it while we're traveling to help keep up with things going on back home. There are just so many things!

Dec 09, 2009

This would make my life easier because I could share it with my hubby, who currently lugs his huge widescreen laptop with him everywhere.

Rachael J.
Dec 09, 2009

This would make my life so much easier because in the span of two weeks I had to reformat my laptop and then my Dell computer up and died. Completely. My laptop is always on shakey ground, and I need it to survive my last year of college. Having another online computer device that would allow me to use Word would give me just that extra bit of relief that I need.

Dec 09, 2009

I would LOVE to have this! It would make my life a lot easier when I travel, because I have a baby and have to carry so much stuff just for him, on top of carrying a laptop (which can get pretty heavy.) And wow, this would just be awesome to have so I can just put it in the diaper bag with everything else!

Dec 09, 2009

I get lost wherever I go, so this would help me to find my way and not be late for things because i got lost (which happens far too often!!)

Dec 09, 2009

OMG! I go to school away from my family and boyfriend and could definitely use a little mobile computer-type gadget to a)check important school info on when I'm at home on the weekends, b)significantly reduce my cell phone bill by letting me use the webcam for skype to talk to the people I love and c)possibly allow me to shake the reputation that I could get lost in a parking garage with the GPS!

So useful!!

Dec 09, 2009

This would make the best Christmas present in the entire world for my husband. He's one of those people for whom it is impossible to think of something to get, and we would never be able to actually afford something like this, so ... I would totally win Christmas!

Dec 09, 2009

OMG OMG OMG I would love one of these. I hope to receive an email from you with that in the subject line:).

Dec 09, 2009

I would use it to show off to all my friends and family! Drool everyone drool.

Dec 09, 2009

This would soooo make life easier because our computer is on the fritz and I am not sure when we'll be able to get a new one! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Dec 09, 2009

This would be so much easier to use when watching TV...

Dec 09, 2009

this is awesome! this would make my life easier at school, then i wouldn't have to lug around my giant SLOW laptop with me. thanks holly!

Dec 09, 2009

I would be the person giving it as a gift to a relative, to make their life a little easier with the portability and wirelessness :-)
