Today
"I was lying in bed this morning listening to this song that went 'if I had to choose one moment, to live my whole life through...' and I thought, I know exactly what mine would be: the moment I came around from THE MOST SCARY OPERATION IN THE WORLD, twenty-six years ago today, and saw your big beautiful blue eyes staring into mine. I wish someone could plug a USB into my brain and through to my computer screen so that you too could see how beautiful and wonderful you were in that first moment we were introduced. And still are."
---An email from my mother. I'm 26 today.

Feb 09, 2006
Awww ... happy birthday. Your mom said it best. How sweet of her to be so eloquent and personal - nothing like a $2.99 Hallmark! Lucky girl!
Feb 09, 2006
That was such a touching story. Happy Birthday. I wish you all the best.
Feb 09, 2006
"Non-pointy"? Do mine eyes deceive me? It reminds me of Steve Martin's poem about the pointy birds: "Oh pointy birds, oh pointy pointy, anoint my head, anointy nointy."
Happy birthday, and your mum is awesome. I guess I must point (HA!) out at this juncture that since I'm 45, I am absolutely old enough to be your mum myself. Which freaks me out on several levels, but notwithstanding all that, HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN.
Feb 09, 2006
your dad is hot!
Feb 09, 2006
What a sweet email. I get phone calls from my mother asking "How can I possibly have a daughter as old as you?" Thanks, Mom. Love you too.
Happy birthday!
Feb 09, 2006
Happy birthday! At least you remembered yours. And I agree with the above comments -- a wonderful note. Doubly impressed that your mom knows what a USB is. Mine, bless her up and down, barely knows that computers exist.
Feb 09, 2006
I'm late, oh so late, but I have a firm belief that birthdays last for several days, if not weeks. What a precious email from your mom (who IS cool enough to know what a USB port is) and here's many wishes for a wonderful year for one of the funniest women of the blogosphere!

Hello, as awkward as this is, I’m Susie’s friend, and have been more or less ordered to write on your blog, as she thinks that you think, that I’m imaginary (if that makes sense.) I have read most of your stuff, it’s quite a laugh, and considering I'm also an English groupie (like Susie), I enjoy it. I’m excited it’s your birthday, because it is my birthday in a week. Happy Birthday! (Oh yes, and tell Susie to get a tan, because she is now as pale as me, much like snow itself!)

Happy Birthday! Late is better than never. :) Hope your TJMaxx tops worked out ok.
Feb 09, 2006
Happy belated birthday! How was it?
That note from your mom is so sweet; gosh, DK and I are very tenatively on the thinking-of-a-baby wagon and seeing that photo of you curled up on your (very handsome, btw) Dad got me very misty-eyed about family and next generations and my parents as parents and US as parents. In fact, I've quite clearly become incomprehensible. Hope you rang in your 26th birthday in a great new top and with lots of love.
Happy happy!
Feb 09, 2006
Ahhh ... how sweet. Now we know where you get your PROPENSITY TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS.
And Happy Birthday! Hope it is the best one yet.
Feb 09, 2006
