If You Jumped Off a Cliff, I'd Probably Jump Off a Cliff Too

Sean is waiting for Barack Obama to email him. Every time his iPhone buzzes with a new email message, his hands fly to it immediately, nervous as a teenage girl. "Is it Barack?" he gasps. Sadly, it has not yet been Barack. It has only been a bunch of junk mail and maybe one $10-off coupon at Overstock.com.

Did anyone else sign up to be emailed the minute Barack Obama announces his choice for VP or is my crazy boyfriend the only one? A friend at work actually signed up to be text messaged by Barack Obama, which I think is even more exciting. Can you imagine the people you'd impress like that? "Oh hang on, I've got a text. I wonder who it's from. Eh, it's just Barack again. He's always texting me---I think he's on the 100 Free Texts a Month plan or something and wants to get his money's worth."

Welcome to 2008, eh? I will remain in awe of being texted or emailed by Barack Obama until someone tells me Barack Obama IMed them to tell them his vote for the VP candidacy. Or Skyped them. Or Facebooked them. Or maybe sent them a private message on Twitter.

Speaking of Twitter, by the way, I....well, I've got a confession. I used to talk a whole bunch of smack about Twitter. It was mostly in my head, but still: I'd say things like "what do I care what you're doing every five minutes? Why do you feel the need to broadcast it? Honestly, I think I can go a few hours without wondering what you ate for breakfast or saw on TV."

But then---and you know this is coming---I succumbed. After the BlogHer conference, when you couldn't see the podium in the panel rooms for the sea of Twitter screens in front of you, I thought I might just have a look. You know, just to see what all the fuss was about. After much to-ing and fro-ing and mental inventorying, I signed up for a profile---nothingbutbonfires didn't fit, so I'm just hollyburns, thus condemning myself to a lifetime of being Googled by potential bosses, who will then discover what I ate for breakfast or saw on TV---and now wham, bam, I'm a fully-fledged Twitter junkie, following along with the best of them.

I think that's kind of what bothers me a little about it, though: the lexicon. I'm not sure how I feel about "following" people, or having "followers," or having to actually request to follow the more private among us. (Pardon me, may I stalk you?) Isn't it just a little bit....cult-ish? Couldn't they have come up with a word a little less menacing? Woooooooohhhhh, don't look behind you, I'm FOLLOWING YOU. I'm on to you, pal! Look alive! Sleep with one eye open! Etc etc etc.

On the other hand, it's really bloody addictive.

Do you Twitter, by the way? I sort of hope you say you don't. That way, at least I know I'm not the last person in the ENTIRE WORLD to get a profile.

Yeah, I Twitter. Actually, I'm writing my thesis about museums and their use of Twitter. Which is like a double-whammy of nerdiness, but oh well.

Twitter is bloggers crack. Not original with me, but so true.

Twitter is one of my favorite things right now. Now that I have an iPhone, I can check it even more often and be annoying! I pull my Tweets into my blog, and my mom and sister read it all the time to see what I am doing. Neither of them will sign up for an account, though. It would be nice to get their updates...

I like the fact that it affords me a place to jot down what I am doing without getting into a full-fledged blog entry, and I also like the challenge of using 140 characters or less to convey a complete thought.

My husband's friend was featured in an article about Twitter in the Houston Chronicle a couple of weeks ago. Since then, more people in the Houston area have discovered Twitter for themselves.

Sorry for the long comment. I haven't gotten out much lately.

I'm with you on the lexicon. And the numbers. It is way too "popularity contest." Imagine that? On the internet? A popularity contest?

I am terrified of twitter. I know that once I start, I'll never stop. So I just keep avoiding thinking about it. For now, that's working. We'll see how long it lasts.

I do twitter. It took me a while to get into it, but I am so addicted now. I used some application where I hooked up my blog to it, so it "tweets" whenever I blog automatically. I was recently told by a person whose google reader has been backed up lately, that she finds that pretty convenient.

Barack has a pretty cool way to notify everyone, I actually wish I knew about that :)

Oooh, I signed up for Barack to email me too. How exciting. I also have twitter (apparently I enjoy band wagons) but I can't help but notice I only twitter about food, which I find kind of sad. Twitter makes me snacky I guess.

I just signed up to receive updates from my man Barack this morning, and like Sean I am waiting to hear from him. Mostly, I just want to brag that Obama e-mailed ME about his choice for VP.

I've been on Barack's e-mail list since Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the Repub race and I decided the rest of the Repubs were too science fiction to countenance. Periodically Barack pops up and ask me for money, and I donated and have the car magnet, but yeah, I am waiting with bated breath for the VeePeeMail.

BTW, I attended the University of Delaware so am hoping for Joe Biden. In Delaware, there are like three major politicians (Pete duPont, Joe Biden and Tom Carper) and every four years they switch seats, so Biden has been a comforting presence to me for the past 25 years. Plus I think Barack needs an old white guy on his team, to be realistic. Here's hoping McCain picks another pro-lifer for a running mate and pro-lifes himself right out of the ring.

I Twitter. Things pop into my head all the friggin time that are interesting and funny, but not really worth a blog post...so I Twitter them, and I love it. I'm just now getting into the whole following and being followed thing, but so far it's working out quite nicely. Welcome!

I don't Twitter and I have no plans on starting. From what I hear, it is a major time suck...and even though I'm curious, I don't have any extra time to be sucked away. My newborn is doing all of that for me. :)

I also just joined Facebook like 3 weeks ago, even after saying I didn't have time for it. I just try to not turn on my computer when the baby is awake...so that leaves early morning and nighttime open for reading blogs and the news.

I twitter (and just started following you! Don't turn around!), though my tweets are generally about only three things: the annoying songs in my head, what I am eating, and how tired I am at any particular time.

But I made my twitter feed private, because random unknown people kept following me, EVEN THOUGH I WAS BEING BORING! (That is clearly endorsement for YOU to follow me, right?)

I don't twitter because I don't want to be one of the unpopular girls that no one follows. You, on the other hand, are probably one of the popular girls that everyone will follow. Plus I'm kind of new to this blogging thing, which puts me at circa 2001. Welcome to the millennium.

I signed up for Twitter recently, and you know? I'm not all that into it. Maybe because I'm not all that popular (sniff sniff), but I think mostly, it's just not my thing.

And I'm pretty relieved -- I resisted for quite a while, afraid that it would take me away from EVERYTHING, but really, I'm content to just check in once every couple of days, or if I come up with something witty and clever (which I SWEAR happens more than once every couple of days -- I just don't always post it). As infrequently as I'm on there, I wouldn't follow me either :)

Holly, I don't know how you managed to have an account for five minutes and you already know more about it than me. Did you know that I learned how to see my replies from you? That whole time I thought everyone was ignoring me. NOT TRUE!

So, you know, thank you. I feel less alone now. ;)

I don't twitter yet, but every time one of you signs up that I would potentially follow? I get a little closer. I'm trying to stay firm.

I definitely do not jump on the band wagon. I'm new to blogging (I do have a web site but have not upgraded it for three years), I do not have a FaceBook or MySpace account. There is something just sooooo wrong about wanting to be Britney Spears friend.

I have no idea what Flicker is or Twitter and I'm not sure I will ever get there.

There are only so many hours in the day and no one has enough to show me how to do all this stuff.

I do Twitter, but I mostly "follow". I so far can't find a real reason to use it. With my website and Facebook and email... why Twitter? Still, it's fun to keep track of those who do.

I just saw your last Twitter post, you need to check out this ebay chick: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/traven7_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

I actually signed up for Twitter about a month ago because one of my friends signed up for it and she sent me one of those generic emails "Hey, your friend has signed up! Why don't you do it too!"

I never use it, though, aside from when I first signed up. I just don't "get" it. It's too much trouble to me to sign in and out just to post 60 words or something about my momentary feelings. Seems kinda stupid/silly in my opinion.

Yep, I twitter. Although when I get behind, it's insanely overwhelming to go back and read what everyone has done for the last three days. (Seriously, some people are BUSY or just making a lot of crap up.)

It can also be a bitch if you're trying to avoid Olympics results or what happened on The Hills and EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. It's worse than the Yahoo headlines.

Yeah but do you have your Twitter posts forwarded to your Facebook page? I, ummm, well, let's change the subject.

You know how you have a circle friends and you seem to just sort of "know" what's going on in their lives? Twitter is like that except without the geographical limitations - or actually knowing them face to face.

What's weird though is that there are people I know on Twitter that I've finally met in person . . . and it's like the friendship has a jump start.

On the other hand there are people that I've barely known in person, followed their Twitter feed and after awhile realized that I a Twitter friendship is as far as I would ever want to go.

There are folks who get Twitter and those who just find it a huge time suck and waste of time. I may get there some day but so far it's been a very interesting and frutiful experience.

Of course, in case you're interested it's cog2803 :)

You're not the last one. I don't Twitter. Or Facebook (though I've begun several times and I always chicken out and delete my account). Maybe it's my age or something, but I'm a little scared of being so "out there" for all to find with a quick Google search. I much prefer my blog. But, I'm going to check out Twitter right now, so maybe I'll change my mind.

I don't Twitter! So, Holly, you aren't the last person to start twittering. I just don't have the time. And it seems to me to be a little bit of a waste of time and more pressure than I need. I can't even get magazine subscriptions (except for my beloved Consumer Reports) because of the pressure to read them all or I've WASTED ALL THAT MONEY!!! Anyway. I don't have a problem, not at all. What were we talking about?
