Confronting My Fears, One At A Time
I had a fairly wacky day last week: not only did I jump into the ocean and swim with sharks, but I also ate fresh lobster for lunch and ordered seared ahi tuna for dinner, and if you know me at all, you'll know I'm not really a fan of seafood. Still trying to figure out which of those is the greater accomplishment.
PS: Yes, I swam with sharks! Lots and lots of them. ON PURPOSE. The one above is just a nurse shark---just a nurse shark who BRUSHED AGAINST MY LEG, OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD---but we later saw a whole bunch of (very large and very sharky-looking) Caribbean reef sharks and even a bull shark too. Thank goodness you can pee yourself in a wetsuit with minimum fuss, that's all I can say about that.

I say eating seafood for lunch was definitely the bigger of the two (very big!) accomplishments. Scuba diving with the sharks was something you "needed" to do for work, whereas nobody was making you eat seafood!

You can officially put badass on your resume because swimming with a bull shark is pretty ridiculously badass.

Good thing I had a paper bag handy to pant into. Breathing under water? That shit is NOT NATURAL!
good for you though.

I agree with Jennie! You are an OFFICIAL OCEANIC BADASS!

Oh, the jealousy. It is blinding me.
Except for the part about the bull shark. Bull sharks are NOT good swimming mates, ever.

Welcome back.
1) How was the lobster? Did you dip it in drawn butter? That's the best way.
2) You own an underwater video camera?
3) That guy petting the shark needs to get a proper dog.

Uhm.
I am pretty much hyperventilating over here.
Why, oh WHY?! (That goes for the sharks AND the seafood.)
Aug 18, 2008
Yes, you ARE a badass. I myself would not:
1) Go underwater willingly...there is NO AIR! Jennie is right, simply not natural.
2) Go into the habitat of creatures who have been known to EAT people! (Or at least take a chunk out of them.)
And seriously, a camera you can take underwater? I know they have those disposable ones for film, but video? Too cool.

See? Told you it was fun! Can't believe you never had seared ahi before. Next time you're in So Cal, go to the Yard House (there's one in Costa Mesa and one in Long Beach) and order the ahi crunchy salad. You will be glad you did.
Scuba divers always have this weird compulsion to pet the animals. Some of Ben's friends have been known to eat freshly cut scallop sashimi while diving. Whatever.

That shark looked like it was lonely and wanted to come home with all of you. I would go so far as to call that shark CUTE. Which might be an improper adjective, but, still. Very awesome. I have always wanted to swim with sharks! Though I'm thinking that when I do it I might go cage-style.

Kerri Anne, I know, it was like a puppy! It was desperate for us to pet it. I didn't go THAT far, though. I'm brave, but I'm not crazy.

I agree with the not-breathing problem. I'm having asthma problems already and listening to the metallic woosh of you breathing freaked me out!
Very cool you did it - you should be proud of yourself!

I love the pan to self for "OH SHIT" reaction. Best thing I've seen all day.
Aug 18, 2008
Petting a shark, that's insane! Glad you lived through it!
Aug 18, 2008
Go yoU!!! (I really admire the eating fish thing since I cannot even look at seafood without getting quesy)
Aug 18, 2008
since i don't eat seafood either...i'm going to go with the lobster as being the bigger accomplishment!
did you enjoy?
Aug 18, 2008
Well it sounded like your breathing was nice and calm and steady. Good job!
Aug 18, 2008
I would have CRAPPED MY PANTS.
You are a braver woman than I.
Aug 18, 2008
you are a rock star! that was extremely cool. well done.

I love the Darth Vader sound of the video.
Aug 20, 2008
Holy crap! I don't know if I could have done that!
Bravo! On the sharks AND the seafood! I just recently started eating seafood and sometimes have a hard time eating it, so I feel your pain!
