What Do You Mean The Site Looks Different? It's Just Had Surgery To Fix A Deviated Septum, That's All!

Surprise! Welcome to the new digs! Are you digging the new digs? Because I'm digging the new digs. Allow me to take your coat, hand you a tall glass of something cold and sparkling, and give you the grand tour.

First: New colors! See the new colors? Two and a half years I had those old colors, you know, and I figured it was time for something new: out with the brown and pink, in with the turquoise and.....uh.....pink. In case you were wondering, this turquoise is supposed to be the color of a Tiffany box, which I held up to the monitor many times in order to describe to my brilliant designer the exact turquoise I wanted. And that's key, by the way: turquoise. It's not blue, it's not green, and if you insist that it's either, I'm going to have to cut you. May the world never know how many variations of blue, green, and turquoise Sean and I had to look at---and argue over---to arrive at this particular shade.

Second: Tag line! I, um, kind of came up with that myself---you know, right after I'd solicited the Internet for one and had you all put on your thinking caps. (They look nice on you, though! They don't crush your hair or anything!) I'll be switching it out from time to time, which means I'll no doubt be using some of your suggestions---properly credited, of course. And, true to my word, if anybody would like me to call their ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend (or ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, or ex-girlfriend's new girlfriend, or ex-boyfriend's new boyfriend) with the "results" of the chlamydia test, I'd be more than happy to. Perhaps a "doctor" with a British accent will make the bad news a little easier to bear.

Third: New sidebar category for cool things I like. It's called Best! Thing! Ever!, of course, which is exactly how I talk about things I feel passionately about, with lots of exclamation marks, just like that, and it's going to be a place for me to show you whatever I'm currently obsessed with. The first entry, as you will see, is about lipgloss, although the (six) gentleman readers of this site might be relieved to know that it won't usually be something so frivolous and girlie. I mean, you know, sometimes it might be lipstick. (Um, not really. It'll probably be food. Or a book. Or a book about food. Or, you know, just whatever I happen to think is currently the greatest thing since sliced bread. Hey! One day it might be sliced bread!)

Fourth: An expanded playlist! Look at it, Internet, it's just like I made you a mix tape, one of those really good ones where I barely left any space between one song and the next, and I managed to time it so that there were only a few seconds left after the last song on side A, meaning you could turn it right over and play side B without having to fast forward. Let's also imagine that I gave it to you in fifth period alegbra and then afterwards we met behind the bleachers and you told me how much the songs meant to you and I asked you if you were listening, really listening, to the lyrics, and then afterwards we went back to my house and read Sylvia Plath out loud to each other, and talked about how we'd move to New York together one day.

Fifth: A more streamlined link to Travelocity's Window Seat blog, which I write for every other Thursday, and to which you are welcome to submit your travel questions, should you be dying to ask something travel-related that I can answer in a subsequent blog post.

Sixth: New email address! It's now Nothing But Bonfires AT gmail dot com, and if you send me any mail about Software In Many Languages!, Deep Discount Vicodin, or How To Solve A SHORT Penis Problem Now!, I am coming right over to your house to kick you between the shoulderblades, while making you watch Gigli over and over and over again. (I might ask you just how deeply discounted the Vicodin is, though. Like, cheaper than Walgreens? How much do I have to order to make it worth it?)

Seventh: My RSS feed has obviously moved. The new address is here.

Eighth: Yeah, the About Me page isn't written yet. That's just me being lazy. So there you go, want to know about me? I'm lazy!

Ninth: This site now has three columns! And it's no longer powered by WordPress but by Drupal, something Sean assures me is WordPress For People Who Know What They're Doing. And apparently he does know what he's doing, because he seems to have designed a fully-functioning site around it. In a week!

And actually, yeah, about that: can you even believe he just did this all by himself? When I only just learned to roast a chicken yesterday? (Slather it in olive oil, stick a lemon up its bottom, put it in the oven for an hour and a half.) I mean, if I might just toot the horn of the person with whom I share toothpaste: that's pretty amazing. I'd tell you to get in touch with him if you're interested in having him redesign your site too, but that would just mean he'd spend all his evenings and weekends working on your project, instead of watching America's Next Top Model with me, and frankly, I'm a little too selfish for that.

Oh, go on, then; I'm only kidding. He does do fantastic work. And he's awfully handsome, too. You know, in case that's on your list of Must Haves In A Web Designer:

(Look! We have a fire escape! I bet you never knew we had a fire escape!)

So anyway, there it is, my newly-redesigned site, all bright and shiny and turquoise. If you could do me a favor and let me know if anything appears weird or strange or off on your version, that would be super helpful---just remember to let me know which browser you're using. Not that I'll even begin to know how to fix the problem, you understand. But thank goodness I know somebody who will.

STOP IT RIGHT NOW (while I myself abhor the exclamation point I imprudently employ the CAPS LOCK at will). It's all so fabulous that I don't even have time to mourn the loss of pink and brown (and I STILL say F those snooty beauty editors in their high rise Manhattan offices, pooh-poohing the continued use of pink and brown) because I'm too caught up in my own particular brand of angst that I like to refer to as Bold Faced Envy.

I like your new website AND your fire escape - both very fancy! I'm thinking Ashley Tisdale didn't just get her "deviated septum" fixed but also had her eyes done as well, but that's neither here nor there! Holly, you have to listen to Valerie by The Zutons, I expect to see it up on that playlist soon!

Ahhh, that Sean. He is very handy, no?

Your site looks great, and makes me ridiculously curious about Drupal. Roger has been asking me lately if I should switch my site from MT to Drupal, and I just know so little about it that I've been hesitant. Can you post screenshots for the geeks in the house?

I LOVE the colours and the tagline! And incidentally, I painted my bathroom tiffany blue and I didn't even mean to - I just loved the colour (and the jewelry)! My roommate pointed it out, the box just disappears against the wall!

I love it! And the tagline is PERFECT. It's making me chuckle. (The disapproving glares of my coworkers are searing holes in the biege fabric of my wee cube cave.)

I am having trouble getting your feed into my google reader though. It's entirely possible that it's me and not any real problem. Because my tech savvy is such that I still think the internet is powered by magic - just like light bulbs and my toaster.

Lurve the new digs.

Just wanted to say Tiffany blue is really more of an aqua than a turquiose, and being an a ad girl in my former life, I can't just leave it alone....but then you say tomato and I say ewwww, cause I'm not really a tomato kind of girl.

The color or colour (as you would say ;-) is the perfect tiffany's box though, and I do love it. Oh and the new pink; coral. Cause I just can't walk away now can I? Ack. I'm going now, before you block me from looking at your lovely blawg anymore.

Doodads -- that's hilarious, because he DOESN'T try to do anything with it. This was taken after we'd been cleaning the house all day; we hadn't even had showers or anything! What you're seeing is genuine 100% bed head. Trust me, my boyfriend---he of the $11 haircuts---is not exactly the type to fuss in front of a mirror.

I imagine having a new site is much like having that new article of clothing that you want to wear everywhere. Except with the Internet, you never have to face the horror of discovering it's dry-clean only.

Beautiful site, you guys. The blogosphere is better for it.

(...I can't believe I just used the word "blogosphere." Ew.)

Love it. Love the color, love the design, love the B in the browser window address box thingy (that totally has a real name, doesn't it?), love the tagline, and I'm sure I'll love the about page one of these days.

Is Sean expensive?

Mar 17, 2008

Holly, it looks great. I like the clouds.

Your tagline reminds me of that Eddie Izzard comment:

"You guys say 'erb and I say herb. Because there's a f'cking "h" there."

Mar 17, 2008

I love this! So pretty!

And now I am a little nostalgic for your old About page, which was totally brilliant and perhaps the VERY first thing I read here (because I started reading here when there were only a very few entries, like the one about your ear tearing and the plastic surgeon with the bowl of gummy people parts -- that one).

36

Mar 17, 2008

The new design is absolutely awesome -- I love the airplane and the color scheme, and the tagline blows away everything your readers submitted. It did take me rather by surprise because my RSS didn't show you'd updated, so I've rebookmarked you.

I think I was one of your quite early readers, and told absolutely everyone I knew about you, so in a certain way I will always think I Knew Her When.

Mar 17, 2008

I also feel compelled to point out that Sean also designed my site, which you have to admit is absolutely gorgeous despite failing to rival Holly's in content. So, you know, if you're looking for a web designer, I recommend Sean absolutely. Not only did he come up with an awesome design seemingly off the top of his head, he is quick and sweet about answering any and all stupid questions from designees.

The new site looks great! The color choice is perfect, just in time for springtime. And I'm loving the "mix tape" you made. It's so perfect to have a soundtrack to accompany your posts.

I haven't commented on your blog before - but I've been a reader for a while and thought I'd say hello! Your lovely new site provoked an actual response from me :)

I swear I wrote a long comment about how gorgeous I think the site is, but it's gone. I was probably taking a bigger sip of wine or something.

But dude, Holly: it's beautiful. Like one of the best-designed sites on the Internet, beautiful. I love it. Nicely done, Sean!

Lookin' sweet, Holly. My favorite part is definitely the mixed tape aspect. How I love a mixed tape.

I had never heard that song by Jolie Holland. Is it me, or is it reminiscent of that song from the film Once, Falling Slowly?

Thanks for exposing me to new music. Greatest. Gift. Ever.

Cheers!

@MsD, I hear the similarity between Roll My Blues and Falling Slowly, at least at the beginning of her song, too.

The new site is quite appealing, to add to an enthusiastic chorus. Sean can point to these comments as references each time he applies for a new gig -- although it's more and more likely that the gigs come to him.

Good on ya for Viva Voce and the whole mix tape idea.

And, finally -- I was with a three-year-old yesterday who launched into the whole tomato, tomahto thing when he was eating cherry tomatoes, much to the amazement and delight of his dad. And then I arrived here, to your tagline. That kid is brilliant *and* psychic!

Onward and upward!

I know you're not doing the super secret bachelor tuesdays anymore, but I hope you are watching this season of the Bachelor? I watched last night and it was so funny I laughed out loud multiple times! Then i read this review of the episode (http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/03/the-bachelor--1.html) and laughed some more - be sure to read the comments, they might be the best part!

I love the labels on this post. Sean IS one of the Best! Things! Ever!

I cannot believe you made the deviated septum joke. My roommate in college got a rhinoplasty quickie that she tried to pass off as "deviated septum surgery." Amazing!

Congrats to both on you on your bouncing baby blog! It's beautiful.

I love the new look! But then, I am biased: I am an aviation fan and ride in a 1925 New Standard biplane in upstate New York 5-6 times each autumn. I even have the authentic British aviator goggles, helmet, and silk scarf -- not for fashion but to wear in biplanes! (It's in my current website header image.)

I recently returned from San Francisco and the weather was so marvellous I kept looking up at the aircraft flying over the city.

I wish I could redesign my blog in one week. I'm still just a newbie with WordPress though, so um, yeah. I'll be sticking with them for a while yet, and I'll have to settle for being wildly envious of your handsome web designer and this fabulous new look!

As one of your six loyal male readers, I must concede I'm happy to say goodbye to the pink and brown. The new color scheme is swell and the site looks grand. Forgive me if I don't wax weak-kneed over Sean's perfectly mussed hair; I'm sure he'll understand. Please give him a punch in the arm or something from me (no hugs, please) and my compliments.

LOVE IT! The turquoise is gorgeous, the airplane is adorable, the tag line is really cute... thumbs up to Sean, and if I could afford him I'd totally make him take up all his weeknights prettying up my blog. Only I am poor, so my free wordpress theme will have to do. But I might be looking for new and fancier colors, since I am loving the brightness of these so much.
And the mix tape feature ROCKS. I need that so badly.
