Our Timing Has Always Been Impeccable

We leave for Ecuador at the end of the week, and while I'm sure our vacation will be glorious, I'd like to register my disappointment at what I'll be missing while we're gone. We seem to have picked The Best Week In San Francisco Ever to be away, and I'm really starting to hope these volcanoes are going to be worth it.

To wit, here's what I won't be doing next week:

1. Hanging out with Heather B, as she sets out on the San Francisco leg of what has somehow become her Blogging Tour Of World Domination.

2. Reviewing a De La Soul show for a freelance assignment (Sean won't be photographing it either, and he's way more bummed about that than I am, because I was all "De La Who? What? Eh." He also won't be photographing a Dinosaur Jr. show, which he's also pretty upset about. And I actually am upset about that one, since Band of Horses are opening for them and I could have been his Plus One. )

3. Going to Leah and Simon's Housewarming Party across the Bay, where there will be---I kid you not---a hot tub and a zipline. In the garden! Where do they live---heaven? Also, I was really hoping to introduce Sean and Simon so that they could do Man Things, like talk about chicks and change the oil on people's cars. (You know, just random people. Isn't that what men do? Oh, who am I kidding---I don't think a single man reads this blog anymore, after all that talk of hair.)

4. The 12th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival. Um, enough said. Damn you, Ecuador. You'd better make up for this somehow.

Well, just because we didn't think it was MANLY to comment on your new haircut doesn't mean we aren't out here. Men, I mean -- though I don't know if any single ones are among us...

Okay, I have to go change some stranger's oil now.

Nice new look, by the way, and enjoy Ecuador!

I'm betting Ecuador will trump the San Francisco Adventure. You might even be able to find a zip line..

I think Ecuador will beat out all of those things- except perhaps the chocolate. And I'm seriously upset for him about missing De La Soul and Dinosaur jr. Ask if I can fill his spot, please?

Have an amazing trip, and (I'm sure this is hardly necessary) take lots of pictures!

If it makes you feel any better I'll be missing out on Leah and Simon's party AND the Ghiradelli Square Chocolate Festival.

But never fear, I promise to return.

Maybe we'll just have to throw another party when you come back. We'll have one of those chocolate fountain thingies and make Dinosaur Jr. play a show on the patio.

Well, if it's any consolation, you know the Shins are coming back in October, to the Greek. Although I have to admit, it's a little soon for me, but the Greek is soooo awesome. But I'm still reeling a little from creeping out James Mercer.

Honestly, it's hard to feel too sorry for you through the jealousy dripping off my computer screen.

Talk about impeccable timing - why am I moving to San Francisco in January and not now? If I had known it was the chocolate festival, I would have totally relocated in time! Sigh. There's always next year.

And does someone please have a remedy for getting rid of mice??? I have an unwanted visitor who will not go away no matter how many traps we set...

As a matter of fact, we're all missing out on those same things you are, too. Except you'll be in Ecuador and the rest of us will be in mundanely named places without accent marks like ` and ~ over certain letters. I think you win.

If it makes you feel any better, they make chocolate in Ecuador. My man was there a couple years ago to learn to make chocolate from bean to bar. Probably ain't no Ghirardelli though.

Maybe Ecuador has fabulous chocolate? Or at least a good shoe store.

That's always the way, isn't it?

Ecuador trumps San Francisco hands down (I've visited the former and live near the latter), especially the Galapagos Islands. They are AMAZING. I tell everyone I know that, if possible, they must visit the Galapagos at least once before they die.

I do have to warn you that if you're landing in Quito, the runway there is scary. The pilots have to make it just right or else the plane goes off a cliff. When I went, the pilots had just enough fuel to make two attempts (at three in the morning, I might add). But I'm sure you're flying with a top-notch airline who will land correctly on the first try, so don't be scared by the second paragraph of this comment and just think happy thoughts about the Galapagos, okay? Have fun in Ecuador!

P.S. I'm not sure if I've delurked before this, but I've been reading through your blog archives for the last week and I think your site is wonderful and funny and beautifully written and a great distraction from things I should be doing. I also promise that I am a perfectly normal person.

You ARE however missing the Bay Bridge being closed which I'm sure will be lovely and fun and every nightmare everyone ever dreamed of!

Have fun in Ecuador!

Ghirardelli has a chocolate! festival? So awesome. We so need to live in San Francisco.

(Also: your hair looks rad.)

New shoes, Ecuador and a glorious week in SF...Holly, if I didn't like you and your blog so much, I would be pea green with envy (but only in a good, internet kind of way). I have no doubt that your trip to Ecuador will trump the week in SF - but not the Ghiradelli chocolate extravaganza! Nothing can be better than a festival of chocolate!

hummphhh - I'm as manly as they come and I faithfully read your blog for the excellent writing and interesting things that always seem to pass before you eyes.

Now - please excuse me while I go to make a donation to the Testosterone drive down at the clinic - if I don't scream like a little girl or succumb to a bout of syncope when they get the big needle out . . .

Now-please excuse me while I, umm...go do what Bill above me is doing.

Oh, we're at the guys' section again so I guess I'll join in...yep, I'm still around, too, but it was touch and go there for a while. (If the shoes bit is coming next, I may skidaddle for a while.)

Oh crap. I just realized I'm sadly out of the loop now that I live in the Mid West... and I'm old. Why? Because I have NO IDEA what a zipline is.
