When Ice Cream Pales In Comparison

Wow, that's crazy, I had no idea you all had such strong opinions about Secret Bachelor Tuesday! Thank you for all your comments and votes. I really like the idea of a modified SBT---a Secret Bachelor Tuesday Lite, if you will, just one calorie!---so a millions thanks for that idea. And I certainly know who to go to the next time I need to make a decision. Do you think you'd all be this good with shoes?

Yesterday, Sean e-mailed me and told me he was having a really bad day at work, and my solution, of course---as this is the solution to all my bad days---was to stop at the store on the way home and buy him a pint of ice cream. (I feel I should clarify that "on the way home" is more a figure of speech than anything else, as I had to walk right past my house and UP THE HILL for another three blocks in order to reach the grocery store. Yeah, that's love, baby.)

Anyway, when I got home, I was all "I got you a present!" and I pulled out the pint of ice cream. And he said "oh, really? I got you a present too!" And pulled out a brand new digital camera.

Yes, seriously, the boy bought me a digital camera FOR NO REASON. It's not my birthday or Christmas (obviously), and I haven't won any prizes or graduated from any programs recently; he just knew my old camera was falling apart (turning off randomly! pretending to be charged and not really being charged at all! looking very scratched and beaten up!) and decided to surprise me. He said "I just wanted you to have a nice camera for when we go to Ecuador at the end of the month."

And I said "God! Way to one-up my gift of ice cream!"

But oh, this camera is marvelous. It has a screen the size of our living room, which is activated not by buttons, but by TOUCH. A touch screen! How fancy! It also MAKES SLIDE SHOWS. WITH MUSIC. Plus, it's very small and silver and shiny. Oh, and I think it takes pictures too. Yeah, I suppose that's important.

Sean has bought me some pretty awesome "just because" presents in the past---a pair of Birkenstocks during my hippie days, a harmonica I like to pretend I can play, a delicate gold necklace I'd seen, fallen in love with, and come home and drawn a picture of in case he ever saw it again---but a digital camera on a dull Monday evening might be the best yet. Sadly, I fear Haagen-Dazs will never cut it again. Even the Dulce de Leche flavor.

And that, class, is how it SHOULD be done...

And he was having a BAD day? You'll really clean up when he has a GOOD day and decides to just buy you something for no reason!

Ah, young love. Tonight my hubby of 25 years (buddy of 30+) and I went to go look at frikkin' WASHING MACHINES at Costco! Is THAT love too?

Wish I could paste a link to a post about it (but I haven't written one), because when I pasted my URL into your comments because I happened to write about The Bachelor too, my hits skyrocketed! You're kinda like that girl in high school who all the other girls wanna be seen with.

No credible reason to post my URL in this spot.

Aug 15, 2007

Ah, we love Sean, don't we? He just scored ka-RAZY points with everyone in the world.

Aug 15, 2007

(Well, points with all the women in the world. All their boyfriends are now pissed.)

Exactly where does a girl find her very own Sean? Please advise.

Wow. Good, good boyfriend!

hello insomnia
Aug 15, 2007

Two thoughts: 1) what kind of camera is it? and 2) To heal a bad day, he goes out and buys you a swank digital camera?!?!

Awesomeness all round.

Aug 15, 2007

Yeah, Dulce de Leche is generally my gift to myself, just because!!

Aug 15, 2007

How incredibly sweet! Even sweeter is that I'm sure he appreciated the ice cream just as much as you appreciated the camera.

And now I'm craving ice cream at 9:30 in the morning.

Aug 15, 2007

Damn, and I thought I was doing good when I got roses last night. Way to one-up everyone, Sean!

Aug 15, 2007

Um, does Sean have an eligible brother? cousin? step-brother? best friend? You cannot blame a girl for trying...

On a more serious note, despite this being my first comment, I enjoy reading your blog.

Oh, and I am moving to Quito, Ecuador on Sept 2 for the year. How ironic! If I see fellow Americans taking pictures with a cool camera, I'll know it's you guys!

P.S. I still need to buy a camera for my year excursion. That one really does have music???

Aug 15, 2007

Wow. What an awesome present! And presents "just because" are the best thing in the world. This morning I got to work and found a love letter in my inbox. It was so sweet and so unexpected, and my day is a million times better for it.

What a man, what a man, what a man, what a MIGHTY GOOD man!

Sean should start a seminar or something--men could get certificates stating they had improved their boyfriend code of conduct. I bet he'd get quite the following among the girlfriends of the world...wait, I'm not entirely sure that hasn't happened already! Regardless, he'd strike it rich and just think about how many random presents you'd get then. It's win-win for all!

Aug 15, 2007

Oh man. I'd come home to find my hubby with a CANOE telling me about how terrible his day was and how it was on sale.

It's a Sony Cybershot 10.1.

Wait, is the 10.1 important? I don't know. It's very pretty.

Aug 15, 2007

I don't know, in my opinion, dulce de leche ranks right up there with technology. And brownie points for going with Haagen Dazs. At least it wasn't, like, Edy's or some random store brand.

Aug 15, 2007

Didn't know you were going to Ecuador at the end of the month! That's awesome. Are you going to the Galapagos? Quito? Guayaquil? My wife and I spent about 3 weeks in Ecuador a few years ago. Let me know if you want some cool recommendations.

Aug 15, 2007

Cool camera choice too! My hubby also got me the a Sony Cybershot last year (7.2 megapixels though) in the PINK color which made it really all for me. He is so awesome.
You should MARRY Sean. You are both so blessed to have each other.
p.s. I love your blog!

Aug 15, 2007

And he knows that girls love gadget gifts just as much as guys?

Seriously *Swoon*

Aug 15, 2007

You know, I always wish my Hub-E would get me random "just because" presents, even just some simple $5.00 flowers from the grocery store. Sadly, it rarely happens. Rarely like once every 4 years. It seems like I am always the gift giver, which sometimes makes me a bit sad. Oh, here I am whining about not getting presents! How pitiful I must sound.

I second all of the previous comments. Sean's a keeper. Congrats on the new cam!

Aug 15, 2007

i got an extra special present last night too. my kitty barfed on my pillow and left it there for me to find when i got home from work.

frankly, i'd rather have the digital camera. or the ice cream.

Aug 15, 2007

My digital camera has completely stopped working as of last weekend and my birthday is in a month. Where on the obnoxiousness scale do you think forwarding this post to a certain someone in my life would rank? It would be a service, right? Because then he wouldn't have to wrack his brain thinking of a gift. Yes, I think it would be sweet of me to help him out like that.

Aug 15, 2007

Ya'll are leaving for Ecuador at the end of the month?! How exciting! I went to Costa Rica for two weeks at the end of May/beginning of June and it was AMAZING. You'll have to post ya'll's travel plans and destinations before you leave so we can all live vicariously!

Aug 15, 2007

Damn. He's a keeper, that one. The last surprise present Ben brought me was bangers and mash to go from a British pub in Santa Monica. He should take Sean lessons.

Aug 15, 2007

Your timing is perfect ... my husband was just asking me lastnight what I want for my birthday ... I'm off to research this camera. Slide show with music? What could be better??

Aug 15, 2007

I heart Dulce de Leche... mmmmm, yum. And I think the entire blogging universe just fell a little more in love with Sean. Seriuosly, does he do anything amiss?

Aug 15, 2007

Do you have another of those guys hiding someplace? Because I would leave my husband for one. Maybe. I don't know, I mean, I love him and all, but I'm not even allowed to touch the digital camera. There is no chance of magical digital camera appearances when you can't even touch one, ever. You lucky girl. (Hold him tight in case the internet ever comes and tries to steal him away. There are a lot of "I love Sean"s in the comments up there...)

Aug 15, 2007

Damn. I swoon when Simon shows up with a cookie for me. The cookies never take very good pictures.

Aug 16, 2007

My significant other grew up in Ecuador (he is not Latin or Hispanic). His parents were missionaries there for 30 years. They lived allover Ecuador- it is very much a part of their family culture. Sometimes when they are all together they will start speaking Spanish to each other. He does, of course, speak it like a native. It is kind of shocking to people (as he is an Irish descended white guy).

I am so jealous that you are going. I have been begging him to take us back for a tour of his "homeland", but he won't take off work long enough. His brother took his wife and kids last year and they loved it.

Aug 16, 2007

That IS quite the present. Once Mike came home and had bought me a new hard drive for my computer. He was so proud. I was so... speechless.

Aug 16, 2007

Damn, dude. Not an inexpensive "just 'cause" gift.

Aug 16, 2007

Ecuador?! I think I read about these plans, but I still want to hear more! Sightseeing, cities, islands?

*waits impatiently*

Aug 16, 2007

Your man sure knows how to rack up the brownie points. Well done indeed. I had to comment just in case you somehow missed this little story..

Aug 16, 2007

Can Sean train my husband? I need more to write about. :-)

Aug 16, 2007

What a sweet boy. I think you should keep him.

Aug 16, 2007

Way to go, Sean! And if the world ever wonders "what's the big deal about personal blogs?" you really should hold this post up and wave it around along with all the comments. I mean, seriously. His bad day? Obliterated by the radiance of your joy. (Not to mention that ice cream) Your day? Committed to memory for life because of that gift. Our days? Enriched unmeasurably by living the moment vicariously. And all the love for the two of you streaming forth from these keyboards? Priceless!

Aug 16, 2007

Nice gifteroonie. I can sympathize with the whole Dulce de Leche thing, btw. I just finished off most of a half gallon the other day, by myself. Not because I was depressed about not having a job, you understand. Just because I didn't want it lying around the house, seeing as I'm going back to the gym and trying to lose weight and everything. Too much of a temptation.

Aug 17, 2007

Switch to the Caramel Cone flavor. That makes up for anything.

And yay for just because gifts. I've never even gotten just because flowers. Luckay!

Aug 19, 2007

I laughed aloud at this, because it reminded me of something similar that had happened to me: Many moons ago, when J and I were dating, I thought I'd do something thoughtful, and got him a toothbrush for when he stayed over.

That night, when he came over, I wrapped it up with a tiny bow, and presented it to him with a flourish.

Unbeknownst to me, that was the night he'd bought me a diamond and sapphire pendant.

My timing is impeccable.

(Re: the ice cream...have you tried Haagen Dazs' Sticky Toffee Pudding yet? YOU MUST.)

Aug 19, 2007

Remember how you told me that you could NEVER got mad at me? Not even if I stole your boyfriend?

I hope you meant that.
