"If You Leave The Coffee Pot Low, You Fail At <em>Life"</em>

My mother once told me that one of the best things about getting married and moving in with my father was that she didn't have to write her name on the food in the fridge anymore.

Although I haven't lived with roommates for a few years now, I do remember the myriad dramas that would arise from the accidental purloining of the last few inches of milk or the suspicious disappearance of someone's only poppyseed bagel. If you could somehow take a time machine back into the various kitchens of the various houses I shared with university and post-university friends over the years, you'd see a mass of black marker covering every item in the refrigerator and cupboard, names scrawled in proprietary capital letters, and usually accompanied by multiple exclamation marks.

When things got bad---dishes weren't done, toilet seats weren't put down, bills weren't paid---we left notes on the community whiteboard, notes that couldn't help but hint at the deep irritation the author of them was trying to stifle. You know the deal: "hey guys, if you wouldn't MIND wiping the countertops when you've finished cooking, that would be great. I'm sure you haven't NOTICED that they're disgusting, what with being so busy and all, and maybe you didn't hear me when I talked about it in the kitchen the other day, but if we could all keep things clean around here, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! Smiley face!"

Now that I'm living with Sean, our chalkboard is more likely to hold a loved-up e.e. cummings quote than a pissed-off missive, so imagine my delight when I stumbled across PassiveAgressiveNotes.com. This website is pure genius, and I have spent the better part of my evening reveling in every single one of these horribly wicked (real life!) notes left by roommates, co-workers, and apartment dwellers. I particularly like the one that says "Those that don't fill up the ice trays AFTER emptying them should be taken out and shot." I'm also a big fan of the rather poignant "Whoever drank all the milk last night is a git. You stopped four people from having breakfast before five hours of lectures without a break. It was bought last night for that purpose, and the Coco Pops weren't even yours."

The sad thing is, given half a chance, I probably would have written both of them myself.

(The title, by the way, comes from my absolute favorite one on the site.)

I love that website -- I just found it myself a few weeks ago and read through all the wonderful, wonderful archives. I've been living alone for the last few years, and short of leaving notes for the dog and cat (I'm sure they wouldn't MIND not eating holes in the toes of my SOCKS, for example, which I JUST BOUGHT for the EXPRESS purpose of wearing, on my FEET, and which their chewing stopped me from doing!), I have been missing these little notes in my life.

Also a big fan of that website...and SO glad I no longer have roommates when I read some of those.

Another fun website that's sort of along the same vein is FOUND magazine: http://www.foundmagazine.com/

Dear Holly,

I just read your most recent post and followed the link to passiveagressivenotes.com. I spent an hour there when I should have been doing other things, like laundry. I counted up how much my early-morning hour was worth (ok 53 minutes), and I expect four dollars and 66 cents by the end of the day. If you do not comply, I'll start taking your time and putting it somewhere where you can't find it. So you can see how it feels.
Thx, SMS :o)

oh god yeah...I can't believe it was only a few years ago I was living with 5 other women and DAMN were we passive aggressive about things like that too. and possessive of food. talk about memories there. thankfully, we all made it out as friends on the other side, and my current food is Sharpie-free. Well, except at my office, where I still have to label my own freaking mustard.

Although, come to think of it, I still sometimes have to label things in the fridge. Otherwise my darling husband sometimes eats the ingredients I need to make dinner...

I also recently discovered that site. Because I have Internet ADD (IADD?) when I suddenly remember a site I want to visit I just open it up in case I forget, then come back to it once I finish whatever I’m doing. I was into the second paragraph of this post when I remembered I’ve been meaning to revisit passiveaggressivenotes.com. Then I get to paragraph four, bizarre.

I just moved into my own place, no roommates at all and I cannot say how it has changed my outlook on going home at the end of the day. No need to get pissed because someone came home completely blotto and thought it would be funny to throw slices of your bread all around the kitchen or dump cereal on the floor and then leave it for you to clean up.

How funny. I just came from there. I love that site. I'm also addicted to overheard in New York for the bizarre factor. Fortunately my roommate is the nicest person in the world so we don't end up with notes.

The memories of my ex-roommate (also ex friend. bad story)...was towards the end of our lease, we only spoke via post-it notes. Well, she talked to me that way. I'd get like, a trail of 4 of them by my door when i'd get up in the morning with the bills I owe her, blah blah blah. Post-its should come out with a "Roommate edition" line. They'd sell like hot cakes!

Although www.knockknock.biz has some great things!

Too, too funny! I must admit that I've been guilty of such passive aggressive notes during my University years, although I think they were more passive-passive than anything, with way too many please and thank-yous.

Sorry to completely go off topic, but they have a wall clock in the shape of a pink KitchenAid mixer on ebay. And I thought you should have one. If you want one, that is.

You are the one with the pink KitchenAid, aren't you?

If not, then I'm sorry. Must be the heat.

First, I have to digress and say that pink Kitchen Aid mixer wall clocks sound absolutely awesome. My mixer is red, though, so it would clash.
Second, I have to agree - how can you succeed at life without coffee?

Melanie...you're saying I'm a failure! Waaa! No, kidding (but I do only drink tea)

This reminds me of an incident at my old office where someone (not me, b/c I don't drink coffee and am failing Life 101, apparently) left the pot on. All weekend. We came back to a lingering burnt smell and were thisclose to having a fire/meltdown situation. Yikes!

New favorite site.

That is a great link/timewaster indeed. I have been on the receiving end of a few good ones in my time. In all honesty I have probably written some doozies too. But not recently. Thank God for being older & married! Now I just say what I'm thinking.

One of the BEST reasons she married you dad? Really? I only know your father from your blog, but I would think him being handsome, musically inclined and adventurous (and I can only assume sweet, loyal, funny and devoted) be the best reasons. Not to mention he worked for Rolls Royce, which must have been such a chick magnet. Hope he never put back a empty milk carton (like my husband)...
