My Little Cynic

When I got home from work this evening, Sean said "did you hear about this thing with Al Gore's son?" And because I had spent all day writing feverishly about Vail---rather than half designing websites and half checking CNN for baseball scores every five minutes---I said that no, I hadn't. And Sean said "oh, he was caught going 125 miles an hour in a Prius---you know, one of those hybrids?---and when they arrested him, they found he had all sorts of drugs on him, including four kinds of prescription drugs and some pot."

And I said "Really? What a scandal!"

And Sean said "yeah, well, I'm not entirely convinced that it isn't just some big publicity stunt dreamed up by Al 'Save the Environment' Gore to make men everywhere go 'Wow, you can go 125 in a Prius?'"

You know what? My husband and I are about to buy a Prius, and our first reaction to that story was "Dude, you can go 125 in a Prius?"

Needless to say, I love Sean! That absolutely was my first reaction as well. In fact, I've already sent in my MTV appication for "Pimp My Prius!" I'm sure the network has that in the works already.

By the way, it's funny to note that, as every red-blooded man who has been passing this story around today via e-mail knows, the top speed of the Prius seems to increase exponentially each time the story is told.

When I first heard this story at 9:00 am, the Prius was maxing out at 76 mph. By lunchtime, it was topping 150 mph! In a weird way, this might be the best PR that the Prius ever got.

Haha, before I even got done reading the post my reaction was, "You can go 125 mph in a Prius?!" ;)

That's funny. Any publicity is good publicity "they" say.

I've heard numerous savvy folk say the same thing about hybrids and their reaction to Gore Jr.

As an aside -- I lived in Vail and its environs for several years: shoot me a line if you need any info.

He may have a point. The first thing I thought when I read that was, "You can go 125 in a Prius?"

And I'm not even a man.

We own a Prius and that was the first thing we said when we heard the story! We have yet to test it ourselves though :) I am thinking perhaps they got the MPG mixed up with the MPH...

But if you're going over 15 (or is it 20) isn't it no longer eco-friendly? But, the big Live Earth thing is only a day away.

Eeks to 7-7-07!

In my house it was me - the wife - that made the comment about the Prius' speed.

I will admit...I was surprised by that, which has almost guaranteed my purchase of a Prius.

Did Sean actually SAY Al 'Save the Environment' Gore? I mean were there air quotes and everything?? I think you should break up.

My favorite bit from the CNN article: "The arrest early Wednesday of Gore's son overshadowed Gore's work on the Live Earth concerts." If anything, it added more advertisement to the concerts. Every time the newscasters mentioned AG3 they coupled it with a mention about his father's work with Live Earth.
Also, the article says that "Al Gore III was driving about 100 mph"

Halfway through reading this post aloud to my hubby, he interrupted to say (and right on cue), "wow, you can go 125 in a Prius."

Maybe Sean is onto something.
