Up Close And Personal

When Sean surprised me with a proper grown-up camera for my 30th birthday earlier this year—thus cementing my status as a proper grown-up myself—I was smitten. (With the camera, I mean. Although sure, he’s alright too.) But after taking it out of the box, I….well, I didn’t think outside the box, I guess you could say, and I do mean that quite literally.

That's For The Future And The Future Is Now

When I was born, I had the cord wrapped around my neck five times. On New Year's Eve, eight months pregnant, my mother had been lying on the sofa, Blondie loud on the stereo on the last night of the seventies. As big as a watermelon, or maybe bigger, I was dancing around inside her, the outline of my tiny fists punctuating the skin of her stomach while my mother watched in wonder. At a crescendo, I jumped, flipping around violently like a porpoise getting tangled up in seaweed. Debbie Harry made me do it.

Home And My Range: Part One

Imagine, if you will, someone asking you if you would like a new stove. Imagine you are in a car in the middle of Montana, on a road trip with your onetime boss and you have already played every car game known to man.

Hello, I Am In Queens

I have been up since 2am California time, so please forgive me if this reads like I gave my laptop to a three-year-old jacked up on high fructose corn syrup laced with PHP, but I am tired. Today in an email I signed my name “Holpy.” And I didn’t correct it.

Home And My Range: Part Two

Never underestimate the excitement of a new kitchen appliance. My 21-year-old self just cringed in horror when I wrote tha—oh, who am I kidding, my 21-year-old self was as nerdy as my 30-year-old self is now. My 21-year-old self, in fact, might even have been more excited than my 30-year-old about a new kitchen appliance because my 21-year-old self often had to choose between contact lens solution and shampoo, my pitiful student budget not stretching so far as to encompass both. A conclusion then: new kitchen appliances are exciting at any age.
