Splendid Things: Sweet Junkie

sweetjunkie.jpg

I am not so much a chocolate person as I am a candy person. There's a difference, I think. I like gummy sweets and squishy sweets and big crunchy rocks of boiled sugar that a person could lose a filling on. When I was at school in England, nothing made me happier than whiling away an afternoon with a good book and a white paper bag of sweets from the newsagent up the road. I've written about this before, about my nostalgic obsession with traditional English candy.

Splendid Things: Online Decorating Sources

kasler_maps2.jpg

It may not have escaped your notice, but I'm deep into the process of trying to make my new house look lovely. The thing about moving into a new house, I've found, is that suddenly you need five billion new things: there's more space to fill, your couch is a weird shape for the room, you get seized with wild inspiration and decide to repaint everything turquoise. (Ahem. Or maybe a slightly different turquoise from the turquoise you painted everything the first time.) Anyway, you get it: when you move into a new house, you start needing different stuff.

Best Thing Ever: Groupon

groupon.jpg

So we've all heard of Groupon, right? I've become a little obsessed with Groupon, if we're honest. While I couldn't seem to get into Gilt or Ideeli or any of those fancy clothes shopping sites, there was a time earlier this year when I bought a Groupon almost every week. Oh, alright, almost every day.

Best Thing Ever: Gavin & Stacey

gavinandstacey.jpg

You guys, I'm sorry, but I think this is the best thing on television. Well, actually it's not really on television here (unless you have BBC America and don't mind starting on season three), but take it from me: it's hilarious.

Best Thing Ever: Bagel Thins

bagel.JPG

You guys, I love bagels. I love bagels so much. One of my interests on Facebook is even "bagels," that's how much I love bagels. I think it has something to do with being bagel-starved for the first fifteen years of my life---England, though I love it, is not so much the hotbed of bagel-making---and then desperately trying to make up for that bagel deprivation with a rampant and steady consumption of bagels since my move to the U.S.

Best Thing Ever: Dyson DC25 The Ball

Dyson DC25 The Ball

Look, I know it's a lot of money. And it's not just that it's a lot of money, it's that it's a lot of money for a vacuum. But Internet, I am not lying to you when I say that the Dyson we bought a few months ago has actually changed my life. I have become a person who---wait for it---CANNOT WAIT TO CLEAN THE HOUSE. I know! It's grotesque! What kind of weirdo am I? But somehow, cleaning the house with the Dyson is so extraordinarily satisfying---be gone, cat hair!

Best Thing Ever: Trader Joe's Chocolate Croissants

painauchocolat.jpg

I got this crazy idea in my head that I wanted to eat a pain au chocolat on the morning of my birthday. Yes, I did just call it a pain au chocolat and not a chocolate croissant, partly because one of my most admittedly ridiculous pet peeves is the mispronunciation of the word  "croissant." Look, I know we can't all be Gerard Depardieu, but when I hear "cruh-saaaawnt"---or, worse, croissandwich---it makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a butter knife, a butter knife that is coated in butter from the croissant I just buttered.

Best Thing Ever: Eclipse Breeze Exotic Mint Gum

gum.jpg

Look, I never said my Best Things Ever were going to be interesting and fancy, alright? But I was in the checkout line at Target yesterday---trying to cheer myself up after dropping my mother off at the airport by buying that new mascara that claims it makes your lashes grow (I'll keep you posted on that one)---when I spotted a new flavor of gum.

Parks and Recreation

ParksAndRecreation-1-800x600.jpg

Are you guys watching this show? I mean, honestly, it's genius. We started off pooh-poohing it, mostly because it looked like a rip-off of The Office---which we also started out pooh-poohing because it looked like a rip-off of the British Office---but now I would hasten to go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps we like Parks and Recreation even better than The Office. (Not as much as 30 Rock, though. Boy, there is a real shifting hierarchy to this Thursday night TV! We live such wild lives!
