Best Thing Ever: Gavin & Stacey

You guys, I'm sorry, but I think this is the best thing on television. Well, actually it's not really on television here (unless you have BBC America and don't mind starting on season three), but take it from me: it's hilarious. So many people kept telling me to watch Gavin & Stacey and I kept pooh-poohing them because the title didn't exactly sell it, and then I caught an episode on my flight home from London a few months ago and I wept with laughter and I hadn't even walked in the door of my apartment from the airport before I was straight on the computer, adding it to our Netflix queue. I mean, I added it to our Netflix queue before I checked the mail for the latest Us Weekly. I added it to our Netflix queue before I said hello to my husband.
So there's the good news: season one is available on Netflix. Season two you'll have to order on iTunes, I'm afraid, but season three, as I mentioned, is currently on every Friday night on BBC America, where I am hungrily snapping it up every time a new episode becomes available. If you like British comedy, you'll love this. Even Sean understands a good three-quarters of what they're saying.

Definitely the best thing ever! I love love LOVE G&S and miss it dearly. People are still wandering around saying 'Oh. What's occuring' in terrible Welsh accents!

Gavin and Stacey is without a doubt one of the best TV shows ever, and I am so glad you have discovered it and are spreading the word!
I lived in Wales for four years which definitely adds another layer to the humour.
If you haven't already, search for the 2008 Christmas special as it is hilarious and poignant in equal parts.
Oh, I am so jealous you still have episodes to watch! It was a very sad day in January when it finished for good.

Aye, fair play.
I freaking love that show. Nessa is the best.
Jun 09, 2010
SUCH a great show!! I like Coupling, too, though not nearly as well.
Jun 09, 2010
Yes!! I am completely in love with this show. Without being too spoiler-y (I'm not sure that this even counts), I am particularly fond of the way in which everyone qualifies "Neil" with "the baby," as though that is his title. And I totally agree with Jennifer-- Nessa is the best part.
Jun 09, 2010
I love this show. Nessa is my spirit animal.
Jun 09, 2010
I recently stumbled onto this and have watched a couple episodes. I'm still getting to know the characters but so far very funny. I'll have to netflix the first season - I didn't know where in the series I was jumping in so thanks for doing my homework!
I also really love Skins on BBC America and am anxiously awaiting its return (season 4 I believe).
Jun 09, 2010
Well, I come from south wales and sound just like Stacey!! Hilarious series!!!
Jun 09, 2010
Pal, I keep meaning to tell you that we started this and LOVE IT.
Hand on my heart, though, we think the Welsh people are almost easier to understand than the Essex people.
I swear it's closer to an American accent.
Jun 09, 2010
NESSA IS THE BEST. I'm so glad we're all in agreement on that. I can't tell you how many times Sean and I say "tidy" to each other around the house. And "crackin'." And "I'm not being funny, but..."
Jun 09, 2010
I love Gavin and Stacey but you know what you should try for your British humour fix? PEEP SHOW. It is incredible and the first five seasons are on Hulu.
Jun 09, 2010
aww..I'm adding it to the netflix. I LOVE The IT Crowd, its an even funnier Big Bang Theory. If you dont know either of those, NETFLIX THEM! Especially The IT Crowd.
Jun 09, 2010
Kate, I LOVE Peep Show! "Was that the bad thing?"
Jun 10, 2010
Yay! I love Gavin and Stacey, it's tidy! Nessa is clearly awesome and Smithy cracks me up.
If you're looking for more great comedy series, check out Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes with Chris Lilley, both are hilarious but SHH is just that bit funnier.

oh wasn't it wonderful. i was so sad when it finished. also, if you can find it, check out the inbetweeners, an E4 comedy about sixth form students. it's genuinely hilarious.

My stepmother (from Blackpool) gave me Season 1 for Christmas this year and I watched the whole thing in one sitting. And then I cried when I ran immediately to the computer, only to find that Season 2 was not yet available on DVD. It's SO SO SO good.
Jun 10, 2010
Charlotte, LOVE The Inbetweeners! My sister introduced me to that. And Vicki, we were so sad when we finished Summer Heights High -- good to know there is another Chris Lilley thing to watch! Thanks for all these suggestions, everyone.
Jun 11, 2010
Worth also checking out Pulling, that was really good too. And The Royle Family. I know someone who worked on G&S. Said the 2 writers (Ness & Smithy) had the biggest egos ever!
Jun 11, 2010
We Can Be Heroes came out before SHH I think, but Ja'mie is in it! Watch out for Ricky Wong, my favourite who has 2 loves: physics and musical theatre!
The IT crowd is great too and The Book Club if you can find it on dvd.
Jun 13, 2010
Will definitely get hold of this. My latest discovery was Beautiful People; it's so amazing that upon finishing chain watching both seasons I immediately started again from the start. Sadly, it seems there won't be a third season.
Jun 13, 2010
I will Netflix G&S, thanks for the suggestion. My husband and I LOVE The IT Crowd! We haven't laughed so hard in a while.
Jun 13, 2010
i'm not going to lie to you, i adore Gavin and Stacy. my husband is welsh and comes from Swansea and so it's a double hit for us. it brings back memories of home for him and i get a fix of the lovely welsh accent that he has somewhat lost from living in the us.
Jun 14, 2010
Oh! I love Gavin and Stacey. It is currently the only reason that I pay extra for BBC America on our cable. I am so sad that the season is almost over. Nessa cracks me up every time.
Jun 16, 2010
My husband and I caught this on BBC America after I read this from you Holly and I insisted we watch it. We laughed so hard! I think we need to catch up on the earlier seasons but the one episode we saw was hilarious! Thanks for making this a Best Thing Ever!
Jun 22, 2010
Um, I just CAME BACK to this post and Googled all your suggestions.
The IT Crowd it is. (Mostly because it's on Instant Paly with Netflix)
Thanks, Holly's pals!
Jun 26, 2010
Just started watching today and love it! I don't get the "before you ask...no he doesn't" joke though??
Aug 16, 2010
I'm a bit late in commenting on this one, but better late than never. Thank you, Holly, for introducing me to this show!! I LOVE IT! I had never heard of it until reading this post some time ago. I meant to comment but always forgot...so now as I'm watching the Christmas special I reminded myself to search for this post. Nessa is awesome!! "What's occurring?" Haha! The show is hilarious!

Will have to go back and catch a few more - think I saw one or two and then kinda forgot about it among my 400million Netflix queue items.
Most recent Brit comedy hit in my land: Pulling. So funny. So out of control, in a good way. Also on Netflix on Demand/streaming.
