Charlie "Cat" Burns: 2002-2011
Our beloved cat, Charlie, a fixture in our little family for the last nine years, passed away on Saturday while we were in transit from Paris to Cape Town. As you can imagine, this is the most spectacularly horrible start to our vacation, and neither of us much feels like being here. I'll write more about it when my heart stops breaking, but I'm not sure I know when that will be.

I'm so sorry about Charlie Cat. My husband's family dog passed away while we were on a family vacation--it was very difficult. Sometimes I think our pets don't want us to see them suffer. I hope you can find the time and space to mourn.

holly, i am so sorry to hear about charlie. i know i mentioned to you earlier that your blog provided a ray of sunshine during my difficult week with my own cat peechee (he experienced heart failure on tuesday and was in the ER for 3 days) - i wish i could return the favor to you during such a sad time :(

Oh I am so very sorry. Charlie was quite the most charming and delightful cat neighbor, and I'm very glad I had the pleasure of knowing him. He was much loved, and so are y'all.

I'm so very sorry, Holly. My family had to say goodbye to our family dog on Friday, and it's pretty much the worst feeling in the world. Nothing replaces the hole a pet leaves.

All I can tell you is time will make it feel less like your heart is tearing apart even if that doesn't seem possible right now. I didn't believe I'd ever be able to think of my pup with anything other than an explosion of tears ever again, but it does get to a point when you can remember the happiness without feeling so raw from the loss. Hang in there.

Charlie hit the jackpot when he got you and Sean for his people. What a lucky kitty to have had such a full and loved life.
Now that I am a pet owner and lover I can only imagine what you are feeling. Charlie would want you to go on your trip that you have been so excited about for such a long time, and enjoy it. He will always be with you in spirit.

Ohhh noooo. I'm so sorry Holly. My (very old, childhood-pet) cat died last summer and I cried every night for weeks. And I was away when it happened too, so I know the guilt. Charlie was such a loved cat, that was obvious to anyone who read your blog and it was obvious to him too, even if you happened to be away from him at the very end. Feel better soon, lady.

Oh no, I'm so sorry! He had a wonderful life with you and Sean. I will miss seeing pictures of him in jaunty argyle sweaters.
As for when your heart stops breaking, we had to put our dog to sleep last October and mine is still broken. It will get easier eventually.
You may come across people who do not understand and say that Charlie was "just a cat," but feel free to tell those people to shove it. With expletives, if necessary.

Oh no! I am SO sorry, Holly. I've read your blog for a long time and don't comment often, but I know how loved Charlie was, and for that he is extremely lucky. Loosing a pet is loosing a family member, I'm just so sad for you guys. Loosing my childhood cat (Snickers, I teared up even typing his name!) was such a heartbreaking experience for me, especially because I was away at college at the time. Sending you guys happy thoughts.

So many people are thinking of you and Sean. Pets are so special. We lost our two cats (16 and 14 years old) within two weeks of one another last year. It hurts, I know. But it does get better eventually. Saying a little prayer for you now.

Unfortunately it never stops breaking...I lost my 2 cats last year in January (Leonardo was 16yo) and November (Maria was 13 yo). My heart still hacks for their loss. But we got two kittens out of the streets in June and it really helps. They dont take their place but they make us happy.
I'm sorry for your loss. It does get easier to deal with. The best wishes for you both.
(I just realized it's been a year today since Maria died. She was my kitty cat... :( )

oh, dear. so sorry to learn of charlie cat's passing. understandably that would put a huge dent in your vacation, but i hope you can enjoy your trip. may you find some peace by reminding yourselves that charlie's not suffering and that maybe he left as he did so you wouldn't suffer so much and in knowing that you will all be reunited someday.

I am so, so sorry, Holly. The timing of life can be so awful. My 13-year-old dog died the first day I was in Vietnam in 2008 for a demanding reporting trip. I was devastated and couldn't stop working. Worst feeling ever.
Hoping you guys can salvage some of this and understanding to some degree indeed how you feel. Best to you.

So sorry Holly. We just lost our 13-year old cat last month. Unfortunately, he didn't move fast enough to get out of the way of the bastard Rotweiller across the street. My heart still breaks everyday that such a sweet cat had to go out that way. I just hope he's somewhere in the constant sun getting his belly rubbed -- maybe he can play with Charlie.

Oh no, that's awful. We just lost our dog Cal (or as I like to call him, my baby boy) very suddenly last week and it's horrible. Carrying on the daily routine isn't the same and the slightest thing will set off another round of weeping. It so sucks. I'm sending you both giant hugs from me and sloppy kisses from my other doggie.

Oh, Holly, I am so sorry about Charlie. Losing a pet is so, SO hard. Two years ago, the cat I had since I was a child (17 years!) passed away. It was quite a long time before I was able to think of her without tearing up.

I'm so sorry. Losing a pet is just devastating. We lost ours last February. All we could do was cling to each other and our shared memories. I feel terrible for you that this happened when it did. Not that there's ever a good time. Take care of each other and know that you gave Charlie a wonderful life and he loved you as much as you loved him.
