Homes I've Had: Haskell Lane

Haskell Lane: 1995-2001

The house is large and green and in Connecticut. The first time I see it, pitch black, it's covered in snow. My brother and I have flown in from boarding school in England a week before Christmas; welcome home, says my mother, to a home we've never seen before. My room is up a back staircase, three blank windows looking out onto the frosty yard. Across the hall: a bathroom with an astronomy-themed shower curtain. A cozy nook of a closet. A door of my own to close.

Haskell Lane has a wood-paneled TV room with green and white striped sofas, a flagstone-floored kitchen, a banister perfect for stringing up beribboned Christmas cards. We eat in the dining room only on special occasions and we never use the front door. The driveway is studded with gravel that crunches pleasingly when you pull in after being away for a while; yellow mailbox, basketball hoop, home again home again jiggety jig.

Haskell Lane is where I learn to drive, where I throw parent-free parties, where Sean picks me up for our first date. In the study, my dad's desk drawers are filled, unfailingly, with quarters and Doublemint gum. When winter comes, we roast marshmallows in the fireplace if the power goes out; in the summer, we watch fireflies snap and crackle from the screened-in porch. Life is happy and easy and endless. I sit on the kitchen counter while my mother cooks, swinging my legs like I've got all the time in the world.

Is this going to become a series? I sure hope so, as I love the whiff of nostalgia that just came my way.

I love this. It's beautiful.
Made me feel nostalgic for my own childhood home.

Sounds so much like the place I grew up in, which was just across the Sound from Connecticut... except I shared a room with my sister, and our kitchen floor was linoleum.

"Home again, home again, jiggety jig." Made me miss my mother, who always drove into the driveway with "To Market, To Market."

I love your writing - beautiful. This one reminds me too of my home and how we only realize how pleasant our childhoods were until we're "grown up".

I love this and can't wait to watch the series unfold. I lived in the same house until I turned twenty-two, and I've only been in three places since.

Always wanted to live in a house like that, but instead I got a ranch house in the suburbs of Oklahoma City, still it developed the same kind of memories.

And.. my dad said the jiggity jig thing every time he pulled into the driveway. He also said "We're off like a herd of turtles" every time we left. No idea where that came from.

I love the way you write. I am homesick right now - but in a very good way.

AA,in our family it was "We're off like a herd of wooden turtles" apparently because wooden turtles are even slower than the real thing ;-)

Lovely piece, Holly. I agree with the rest that I'd like more of the same.

Doublemint is the champagne of gum. Forever and ever, Amen.

As you chew calmly and quietly you find yourself laughing, gently, affectionately, at the smooth, sophisticated and mature flavors.. Love me some Doublemint. High-five your dad for me.

Ah, this is lovely. Moving changes the concept of home, yes? But, I almost think it makes feeling at home in a place even better.

Makes me want to be a teenager again. I guess, not really but what a great, worry-free time.

IT'S A TIME IN LIFE THAT WE ALL TRY TO GET BACK TO OR CREATE FOR OUR OWN CHILDREN...IT'S SIMPLY A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN HERE ON EARTH.
