Home Sweet Home

Internet, I have loved living in this apartment, I really have. I've loved the hardwood floors and the big, breezy rooms and the original crown molding and the checkered tile in the bathroom, and I have really, really, really loved the dishwasher, but today someone put a bag of cocaine into the panel of our intercom system and Internet, I think that's the universe's way of saying "you've booked your movers for June 24th, you say? Not a moment too soon!"

We came home from work this evening to a kerfuffle on the front stoop, see. The building manager and several of our neighbors were gathered around the intercom system and tucked inside the intercom system was a small white baggie of.....well, I'm not exactly au fait with my Class A drugs, but I'm thinking it probably wasn't sugar.  The intercom system is a big metal box with a clear plexiglass cover over the top of it: the enterprising young chap (or chapess?) had forced the edge of the cover off its hinges and shoved his (or her!) little bag of naughty drugs inside before taking off.

Now this seems like kind of a crappy plan for a couple of reasons: one, wouldn't it take rather a long time to do this in the first place? I mean, I'm no expert but if you're running from the cops and you need to hide your stash somewhere, is it really the best use of your time, as they say in the corporate world, to pry off the panel of an intercom system, or would it perhaps be more effective to, you know, toss it over a really high fence? Second, isn't hide the operative word here? I can certainly think of better hiding places for illegal substances than CLEAR PLEXIGLASS BOXES, AM I RIGHT?

Anyway, yes, we booked the movers last week for June 24th which, coincidentally, is also the date I'd set to strangle the college kid next door with the cord to his techno-pumping stereo system, so I guess that works out pretty well for him and his all-night raves. Lucky escape there, college boy.

We picked up the keys to our new house last Friday after work and oh, what an occasion it was. The sun was shining and the sky was the bluest blue and the whole drive out there had a sort of dreamy, ethereal quality to it. First, we went to our realtor's office where we signed probably the last remaining piece of paper in the entire world, seeing as we'd signed every other piece of paper in the world before it:

And then we were handed the keys to our very first home, which of course prompted a flurry of commemorative picture-taking.

After a quick pit stop at Safeway for champagne and kettle chips, we drove the sunny streets of our neighborhood, winding our way towards our new house.

 Sean opened the front door....

.....and carried me over the threshold, no kidding, although I was shrieking all the way "Don't scratch the walls, don't scratch the walls!"

Then we opened some champagne and admired our super 90s kitchen that we're just itching to renovate.

Cupboards: to be painted white this weekend and given a makeover with clean stainless steel door pulls! Countertop and backsplash: will have to wait for now, but will die a very painful death when the time comes.

Also we gave each other a high five for owning what is probably the country's most totally hideous wallpaper. Sean loves this wallpaper.

See? See how much he loves it? He really loves it.

Side note: this wallpaper is no more! My parents were here this weekend and while we were at work today, they stripped all of it off. Best parents ever!

So we watched the sun set, crunched on our kettle chips, and toasted to our new house. I think we're going to be very happy here.

Very, very happy here.

More photos from our first day of homeownership here. And many, many, many more to come. You've been warned.

There's something so enjoyable about taking something and FIXING it. Can't wait to see what you make of this place. Best of luck with the renovations!

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations. There's a great sense of satisfaction in owning your own place.

Jun 15, 2010

Congrats! I'm so excited for you guys! This is one of those Once In A Lifetime Moments I'm looking forward to myself. I hope you'll blog about the renovations in ridiculous detail...? I BEG OF YOU. :)

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations, Holly and Sean! I am looking forward to every bit of the process where you make it your home. TO LIVE VICARIOUSLY, is my motto. Enjoy it! And get as much done as you POSSIBLY CAN before you make an heir. (Or at least do all the stuff you don't need to hire a contractor for.)

Congratulations! We have done all of that cabinet painting and wallpaper peeling (twice, actually) and I can tell you it is so, so worth it when you see the finished product. And it's even better when you can get someone else to do the work for you!

Jun 15, 2010

aw, congratulations! That front gate is fantastic, by the way.

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations!! Very exciting! Hope the move goes well. :)

Jun 15, 2010

As someone who has removed three bathrooms worth of wallpaper, I can say you have awesome parents. I have been wavering on whether or not to paint our wood kitchen cabinets, so I can't wait to see photos of that project! Congrats!

What a fabulous day, and what a FABULOUS front door!

You make me wish I'd take pictures after we signed our papers.

Can't wait to see what you do to the place.

Jun 15, 2010

So happy for you! I, for one, cannot wait to see the pictures.

Jun 15, 2010

Potato chips and champagne are one of the best combinations ever...

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations!!!! Yall are so cute! Good luck and have fun with the many DIY projects that are sure to come. A wedding has nothing on a house, right?

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations! It's so satisfying to strip off previous homeowner's decorating choices.

I LOVE the front door.

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations! I have to admit that I am aflame with envy over your new home-- and think it is just perfect to celebrate with champagne and kettle chips.

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations! It must be such a great feeling to be a homeowner! It will be so much fun to make it "yours."

Jun 15, 2010

Congrats! So exciting!! We got our keys less than a month ago and it was pretty darn awesome! We also had champagne right away. And then we immediately started painting the kitchen. Now, we live in a world of boxes. Exciting stuff! Enjoy!

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations! I'm so excited for the two of you.

Wait, so 25 comments in and no one's mentioned how nicely the bag of cocaine would have complemented your kettle chips and champagne?

Congratulations, homeowners! And from that picture, maybe the kitchen tile wouldn't even be close to bad once the cabinets are white? Yes?

Jun 15, 2010

Awesome! Congratulations!! Very exciting..

When I was in SF this weekend I looked for you in all the silly touristy places you'd never be, and of course didn't see you. I did however imagine every house I saw on our silly (read: awesome) trolley tour to be yours. Congrats!!!

Jun 15, 2010

One of them may well have been -- one of those trolley tours goes right by our apartment! I always wave to the people on them if I'm standing in the window.

Congratulations you guys!
Did that wallpaper taste like snozzberries by chance?

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations Holly! We move into our first place Thursday. Our crackheads downstairs must have stayed up all night painting their garage dark purple which looks hideous and poorly done. Not to mention it is a rental so who knows how that works. They are the only neighbors in our complex who leave their garage open all day and have no car. We think it is an open for business signal for whatever they sell since the single mom does not work and yells the f word at her kids and cats all day. We are stoked to move. Can't wait for more pics!

Jun 15, 2010

We totally did the champagne thing on our first night in our cabin. That and a two person dance party to old records.

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations on your new home, and what a great way to celebrate! The previous owners of our home also thought it a great idea to install bathroom tiles in the kitchen. Yay salmonella

Jun 15, 2010

Congratulations! It is so exciting owning your first home. I remember the days of when renovation projects were still fun. :)

You must - MUST! - have sex in the house at least once before you move all the furniture in!

Happy new house indeed.

Jun 16, 2010

Super excited for you guys, and cannot WAIT to see more pics of all your hard work and fabulous new house. Congratulations!!

Jun 16, 2010

This is so exciting! I loathe packing but there is something so satisfying about putting all of your things into their new places in your new home. I for one, cannot wait for more pics.

Jun 16, 2010

Oooh! Yay! It looks like you'll be living in/around my old Sunset/Parkside neighborhood?! Good for you. Tell my dear old L Taraval train that I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night/early morning SURE that I hear it on its rambly trek past my bedroom window.

Jun 16, 2010

YAY for new houses! You know- so I'm not sure if anyone suggested this, but had you been able, and filled with a little entrepreneurial spirit- you could've made off with that white stuff, sold it to some rich kids and paid your first mortgage payment.

Or not. Just kidding. Please don't send the police to my house. I swear I'm not a drug dealer.

Jun 16, 2010

Congratulations! I wish we had a picture of the heinous 70s green, pink, and silver (glitter!) wallpaper in our first house's master bathroom. Heinous.

Jun 17, 2010

You're making me tear up remembering our new house. Congratulations here's wishing you guys many happy years in your new home.

Jun 19, 2010

Congrats on being a home owner! That is beyond exciting...Have fun with making your new house your home!

I can't till this same occasion occurs in my life!

Jun 20, 2010

P.S. Congrats on your new digs!
