Putting It All Together: Let's Talk About Shoes

If there is one thing I have learned in my tenure as a blogger, it's this: never put a picture of your shoes on Flickr. Well, let me rephrase that a little: never put a picture of your shoes on Flickr without expecting some weirdo to favorite them. But that wasn't a weirdo! you're saying, that was me! Trust me, it wasn't you. It was some fortysomething dude who lives in his mother's basement and gets his kicks---the kicks he doesn't get when he's winning online role-playing games and stroking his scrawny mustache, that is---scrolling through pictures of manicured toes in mules and Manolos and maryjanes on the Internet. There are serious shoe fetishists living inside your computer, is what I'm saying. Never, whatever you do, put up a picture of your new Wellington boots. You will not believe what comes crawling out of the woodwork when you do.
After that introduction, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that I like shoes. Who doesn't, right? Shoes are awesome. I myself have many pairs of shoes, and I am willing to bet that you have many pairs of shoes as well. The best kind of shoes, I have discovered, are gold shoes. You kind of can't go wrong with gold shoes: they go with everything. The shoes that I wear more than any others, in fact, are these cheap gold quilted flats I got at Payless a million years ago: they're super comfy, super durable, and you cannot find an outfit with which they do not look a million bucks. I mean, maybe a wetsuit, I guess. That might be weird.
For my wedding last September, I wanted turquoise shoes. Don't ask me why, I just knew I wanted them. I wanted to pull up the hem of my big white dress and have a pair of turquoise shoes peeping out from under there, and such was my mad desire for turquoise shoes on my wedding day, that I ended up with two pairs of turquoise shoes, which is a bit of a conundrum if ever there were one. You've heard of two-dress brides, right? Well, I was a two-pairs-of-shoes bride. Not because I wanted it that way, you understand, but because I'm wholly and horribly indecisive.
First of all, I had these, which I'd bought online, dyed turquoise, and then DIY-accessorized with little white flower hairclips from H&M:

And then a couple of weeks before the wedding, I'd found these on super-sale in Nine West, and they were so comfortable (and so turquoise) that I bought them too:

I was only going to wear the comfortable Nine West ones for the ceremony---lots of standing, you see---and then change into the fancier first pair for the rest of the night, but as is the case with weddings, you have about seven trillion other things on your mind on the day itself, and I ended up not wearing the first pair at all, which means it was the strappy Nine West pair that made it into all of the pictures:

That's sort of a stupid thing to mourn, I know, so maybe the less said about that the better.
Still, I do still have the first pair sitting in my closet---now devoid of the flower hairclips, unfortunately, which got lost somewhere along the way---and every week I pull them out and think "I should wear these with...." and then that's where that thought ends, because I should wear them with what? With my big white lacy wedding dress? I mean, that's kind of all they go with. They're beautiful, though, and I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to get rid of them. They remind me of everything I loved about my wedding: how everything that meant anything was something we'd made ourselves.

Next month's Putting It All Together video is going to be about---you guessed it---shoes, and your host Susan will be pulling from the comments on this post (and from all the Putting It All Together posts this week) when she's planning the content for it. And so I'd like to know from you, dear Internet, if you've ever felt about a pair of shoes the way I feel about my wedding shoes. Have you ever been, ahem, emotionally attached? Show me your closet and tell me your story. I promise I won't turn into some sort of weirdo who favorites all the Flickr pictures of your feet.

I am sorry, but those shoes would look AMAZING in a pair of crisp well fitting jeans and a loose fancy top and some big bracelets on a dinner or movie date. i mean, yes, they would have ROCKED the wedding too, but let those puppies out to play!

I agree with Janie above. That first pair of shoes is fantastic, and could look great with jeans and a white top! No reason to keep such a great pair of shoes stuck in the closet.

You can so totally wear those shoes with something else. Jeans, a t shirt, and some turquoise jewelry. A cute little white summer dress or a black evening/cocktail dress. Bring them out instead of those gold flats once in a while!
Apr 26, 2010
I think you ended up with the right pair on all night. Those Nine West ones are going to hold up so much better in photos over time.
I'm much more into finding my wedding shoes than my wedding dress. The shoes and the playlist. Someone else can decide everything else, right?

Love these shoes!
My favorites are my Birkenstock sandals in SILVER. They go with everything, are super comfortable once they are broken in, and they make me feel very chic and sophisticated....until I look in the mirror and realize I forgot to put my other earring on.

I just put my gold strappy flats on and I AGREE! They were also my wedding back-up shoes becuase (as you were indecisive) I was worried that I might somehow need a second pair as a result of some unknown disaster. And I love the pair that you ended up wearing, mostly becuase they seem more wearable in the non-wedding world. I love wearing my wedding shoes to work, out to dinner etc.

I have a pair of bronze flats with a square toe and a bow on top. They are super cute and the best thing is that I DIDN'T BUY THEM. My girlfriend bought them but didn't like/need them. I love to benefit off of others misguided purchases. :)

You've written about the crazy shoe people on flickr before, so I totally thought of you when I found the "video description" option on Zappos. It's a video from the knee down of a woman modeling shoes from all different angles- essentially porn for the crazy shoe people on flickr. Also? Surprisingly not that helpful in evaluating potential new shoes.
On another, less creepy note, I have taken your gold shoe evangelism to heart and now I own several pairs. And love ALL of them.

I want to see your Payless gold shoes.
I am going to look forward and tell you about the shoes I have recently bought which I expect to be in love with forever. Some Rainbow flip flops, a pair of Tory Burch flats (whiteish-greyish color) and some super cute mustard-colored Miz Mooz heels...
I have crossed the threshold to only buying comfortable shoes even if they are expensive and expect to actually save money by not buying dozens of shoes I never wear.

Take those shoes out dancing girl!
I've been wearing a pair of grey croc Tieks nonstop lately. Love them.

I have two pairs of shoes that i love, I have one shoe that i have from when i was younger i loved those shoes and only wore them on special occasion an now i only have one black laser cut peep toe that i want to some day have a shoe designer make another one like it.
And because you brought up gold shoes, I have a pair of 3in ankle strap heels that i love a rarley wear because of a) the hieght b)i have only one dress that goes well with c) usually when i dress up we walk around so again i guess the 3in heel isn't the best idea

I am constantly getting emotionally attached to shoes - which is why I own far too many but wear the same ones over and over. A few years ago I bought a pair of zebra striped flats that I have worn to death. I just cannot part with them despite the fact that I found a similar pair recently but they just don't slip on as easily and aren't as comfy. But my new favorite flats are a gorgeous pair of patent leather cream flats that I hvae now discovered (or am willing them to) go with everything. They have a tiny little gold plate embellishment thing too, so maybe that counts as gold shoes?

I feel the same about my wedding shoes. I bought some princess heeled, sling back, cream colored satin shoes and paid way more for them than any other shoes in my life. They even came with their own individual cloth storage bags! I justified the expense by telling myself I would have them dyed black afterwards and they would be perfect for many formal occasions in the future. Alas, I can't bear to dye them, they are so lovely -- and a wonderful reminder of a perfect day.

I have those same strappy turquoise Nine West shoes!!! They are pretty fabulous and turquoise.
Apr 26, 2010
I'm desperately in love with my vintage inspired, red hand tooled leather sandals. I have worn them with short, skirts, jeans, slacks. I should have bought a couple of pairs for when these wear out!!!!
Apr 26, 2010
I LOVE both your pairs of turquoise shoes, and I agree with the others who said they would totally rock with other outfits. Don't just keep them--use them!
I don't currently have any shoes that I feel sentimental about, because I have moved too often and shoes are something that gets left behind far too often. I still feel wistful for a pair of Liz Clairbourne black heels that went with ALL my outfits but were comfortable enough to wear for hours while teaching. Dang I miss them!
Apr 26, 2010
I think those other shoes should go out dancing on each anniversary. Until pregnancy changes your shoe size... and then they become fabulous fodder for the kids dress up bins!

What Janie said! And what karen said. And...:)
Okay, here's a question for you: Shoe clip-ons always drive the top of my foot crazy - the clips either itch or dig. What did you use on your pretty wedding shoes?
Apr 26, 2010
My first word was shoes. True story. I pointed to my feet, yelled "SHUZ!" and haven't shut up since.
My current all-time favorites are a pair of pink Camper flats that went to the great Closet in the Sky a few years ago. I'm still sad.
Apr 26, 2010
I live in checkerboard Vans slip-ons and so my husband bought a pair so we could both wear them to our wedding reception (June '07) and designed the cover of our wedding favor mix CD to have the focal point of a pair of slip-ons.
Apr 26, 2010
Shoes that I currently "love" go in and out of rotation. However, there are two pairs that will be grabbed in a fire:
My gold Gucci python heels. My first high-end shoe purchase (Bob Ellis on King!!) and I'm still wearing them almost ten years later. They are phenomenal.
And my Loubs. 5+ inch black patent leather slingbacks. My then-boyfriend took me into the store and said "pick"..... that's why I married him!
Apr 26, 2010
I think there are tons of opportunity to rock those first pair. They'd look great with some white jeans (if you wear white jeans, I know some girls don't).
I too have bought two pairs of wedding shoes (along with 4 wedding dresses). I may go for a third pair, don't tell my fiance.
P.S. I love that I got quoted in one of your post. I feel famous!

I have turquoise shoes that I wear with chocolate brown. I love the color combo. ;o)

I have some platform shoes that kill my feet but were so fun to wear when I was younger that I can't get rid of them.
May 14, 2010
So cute! Love that color!
May 14, 2010
I have a pair of running shoes from training for my first big race, and I can't get rid of them. Sometimes I still wear them to run in, even though they are totally worn out & probably kill my knees!
May 17, 2010
Those are adorable. But I too opted for something more comfy. I wore *shhhh, don't tell* house slippers under my wedding gown. The hubs is only an inch taller than me so I wanted to stay as short as possible. And my feet were oh-so-comfy!
May 17, 2010
I like shoes best at the point when they need a little duck tape. Just kidding, but I do tend to hang on longer than I should because they get so comfy with age.
May 18, 2010
Please wear the shoes and show us pics! They are so cute! :) I have always had a favorite pair of shoes that I wear time after month. I am always sad when they wear out.
May 22, 2010
I love the turquoise shoes with the wedding dress, very cool.
May 24, 2010
I agree with others that your shoes will look great with jeans. My sentimental pair of shoes is a horribly ugly pair of Birkenstocks that I got my senior year in highschool (circa 1995). I wore them all through college, including my year in Europe. I just can't part with them.
