Good Things Come To Those Who Wait, Particularly When Those Good Things Are A Washer And Dryer In Your Own Garage

I apologize for the indelicate nature of what I am about to say next---and in particular to any parents or in-laws who do not have time to stick their fingers in their ears before reading it---but holy shitballs, I think we just bought a house.

WE JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE.

Oh alright, we didn't just buy a house in the way that you sometimes go to Target for nail polish remover and find yourself standing in the parking lot half an hour later shrieking "I just bought a TELEVISION! What the HELL?", but that's only because  the nature of house-buying is so crazily drawn out that it would be---thank goodness---sort of impossible to arrive home after the Open House with the keys to the property in one hand, the title in the other, and a rather maxed out credit card.

So no, we haven't bought the house yet, but we've......well, we've signed a lot of papers. We made an offer last Wednesday, the sellers countered on Thursday, we settled on a figure on Friday, we signed a lot more paper today, and now we're in escrow, where we shall be for the next fourteen days. Funny story, I've always confused the word "escrow" with the word "Enron" for some reason and let me tell you, the bank doesn't like it when you ask how long your money's going to be in Enron.

Oh Internet, the house is lovely. It's in the city---though in its furthest reaches; no more walking to work for us, unfortunately---and it was built in 1943, almost 67 years exactly to the date we'll (knock on wood) be closing on it. It has a little backyard with a big old tree---"Can we build a swing?" I asked Sean excitedly; "For our future kids?" he asked; "No, for me!" I replied (I've always wanted a backyard with a swing)---and you can see the sea from the living room and one of the bedrooms. There is a study for Sean and his three miles of tangled computer cords, and the floors are wooden and shiny, and we are going to have not only a garage of our very own (no more getting up to move the car at 6am for street sweeping! No more circling the block for hours, looking for a space!) but also a washer and a dryer within that garage and man, when did I ever get so middle-aged? It's just a few blocks from public transportation, a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, a few blocks from the library, and yes, I have already mapped the route to and from Trader Joe's, I'm surprised you even have to ask. (Uh, I did it before we even put in an offer, if you must know.)

It's also in dire need of some serious wallpaper-stripping and linoleum-ripping-up, and boy, if you thought I threw myself into my wedding with enthusiasm, just you wait and see what kind of crazy DIY nester I'm going to turn into now. I am practically salivating at the thought of all the time I'm going to spend choosing paint colors and taking down light fixtures and smashing up tile. No really, I just shivered with pleasure. A faux tin ceiling! Too much?

So that's the exciting news, and if all goes according to plan---cross fingers, cross fingers, cross fingers---we should be closing on June 3rd, which is, coincidentally, the day I get back from a work trip to London, which might also possibly make it The Most Stressful Day Of My Life. I have plenty more to say about house-buying and about our house in general, but I shall save it for later because the most glorious thing just occured to me and now I need to go and high-five Sean before I forget. GET THIS: WE CAN HIDE THE CATS' LITTER TRAY IN THE GARAGE. Oh life, you are too wonderful for words.

Hooray! That's so exciting. Last year I lived in the Sunset, which definitely counts as the furthest reaches of the city, but the proximity to both Golden Gate Park and the beach made it so so worth it.
Congratulations on your new house!

You're so brave! We are considering buying a house too, but all the work required is giving me the vomit-shivers. I am obsessed with things being clean and orderly and just thinking about living with dust and debris is...well I just can't think about it right now. How will you cope?!

Congratulations!! My husband and I bought our house about a year ago and it was surreal city. Who would trust us enough to give us a house on not much more than a promise and a handshake? But they did, haha, jokes on them!

Is this your first washer-dryer-in-your-house experience? You're going to LOVE.IT.

As someone who has done the wallpaper pulling-down and the linoleum tearing-up, I can tell you that you will want to quit in the middle of it, but it is so, so worth it in the end. Congratulations! I closed on my house (the one I do not live in sadly) the day after a very scary operation for my dad which made it more anti-climactic than scary. But my sister made her first home closing exceptionally stressful by doing it on her 30th birthday which was the day after she got home from a week long business trip during which she had swine flu and interviewed for a promotion AND this was all a mere 3 weeks before her wedding. I'm not trying to downplay your stressful finalizing the closing from work trip to London thing, just trying to say it could be much, much worse.

I am super excited to see all the pictures of your house. I love old houses and yours sounds wonderful. Is the garage under the house like all the hillside homes? I'm sure you'll adapt to driving to work. It will ease the guilt a little that the two of you can still drive in together and that you have some things like the library and a park.

Apr 27, 2010

Congratulations! As someone who DIY'd an entire house over 3 years, I will pass on the fruits of my experience: for every job you plan, estimate a length of time it will take and then double it. But it's worth it in the end to sit in your own house, look around and think "we did this!"

Congratualtions! And I'm trying to think of a way to say this without sounding creepy (I promise I'm not being creepy!), but I know the exact location you are talking about. . .in fact I live there too(and rent). Having the ocean and the park in walking distance is so amazing, and it makes up for the distance from the rest of the city. And trader joe's is a very quick drive. Good luck with the rest of the process, and with moving!

Your blog is fabulous, and I enjoy it even more because we are kind of living parallel lives. I got married a week before you, and we just bought a house as well.

Be a little wary of the closing date though...they aren't always accurate. My husband and I bought a house last summer, and they said we'd close by June 6th. The actual close date ended up being August 8th. So, be prepared for that date to move back.

That is AWESOME! You totally should do the tin ceiling thing. I love those. I will then have to come over and steal it piece by piece in the middle of the night to put it in my house (which I don't own yet).
