See You Next Year
I would like to begin this post by announcing something that has just occured to me: by the end of today, I will have eaten cheese for all three meals. I had cream cheese on my bagel this morning, and a hefty selection of leftover Christmas Eve cheese and crackers for lunch. For dinner---my Last Supper, as it were, as I'm leaving for San Francisco in the morning---my mother is honoring my request for macaroni and cheese (or, as English people call it, macaroni cheese; I'm not sure why we leave the "and" out of it, maybe because we're too stuffed from eating it to exert that much effort), as well as apple and blackberry crumble. I was going to say that I've probably gained a good twenty pounds being home this week, but come to think of it, I think I've actually gained a good twenty pounds just writing this first paragraph.
So anyway, it's awkward that I haven't actually asked you this before, but how was your Christmas? Ours was great. It was the first, if you can believe it, that I've spent with Sean---yep, in all our fifteen million years of dating. And while Sean has known my family forever---he first met Luke and Susie when they were in the third grade, for instance---I was still just a tiny bit worried, beforehand, that he might not....how do I say this?....know what to make of us at Christmas. We are a little bit loud, you see. And enthusiastic. And we have all sorts of weird and wacky Christmas traditions that I was slightly concerned might not.....translate.

(What in the the HELL have I married into?, he's thinking.)
One of the best things about Sean, however, is that he is a very good sport. And he fit right into Christmas at the Burns house, just like he'd been celebrating it with us all along.

He even joined in with the annual Burns Family Christmas Eve Singalong, an event that I am not at all embarrassed to say I look forward to all year long.

(Ah yes, Piazza New York Catcher, that old Christmas classic!)
He wore the hat from his cracker during Christmas Day lunch....

.........made sure his wife always had a full glass of champagne....

........and made himself very useful taking pictures of a family that has yet to master the art of the self-timer and therefore has very few photographs of all six of them together:

In fact, he took a whole bunch of photographs:

(Man, look at my parents. Let's all hope I got those genes.)

(I come from the "Oooh, Let's Try It On Right Now!" school of Christmas present opening. Jacket, pashmina, shoes: all new!)

(The four most beautiful words in the English language: sausages wrapped in bacon.)
There are about a million more photographs of Christmas 2009 here, one of them featuring my unparalleled excitement at opening the world's most beautiful desk chair, which I have been lusting after for years (no, really, years.) In a strange turn of events, I bought Sean a desk chair too---mine was from my parents, so at least we didn't buy them for each other---and in between my excited flapping, my brother Tom turned to look at us wryly. "Wow," he said. "Desk chairs for Christmas? Man, I hope I never get married."
So now it's the day before the day before the new year, I haven't even started packing to go back home, and 2009 is rapidly coming to a screeching halt despite the fact that I have yet to make any moony, nostalgic, sweeping generalizations about it. Around the dinner table this Christmas Day, though, we did ask each other what our favorite moments from the last year were, and while I will forever remember 2009 as the year I got married, I'll also remember it as the year my parents moved back to the states and I finally lived close enough to them to pop home every month, which---strange as it may seem---I haven't actually been able to do since I went off to boarding school aged eleven. So having my family---well, my parents---close by this year has probably been one of the very best things about it. We're all making up for lost time.
How will you remember 2009? Does any one moment stand out from the rest? Did you have a crappy year or a fabulous one? Oh, how I hope it was a fabulous one.

My best gift this year was a bite guard. It could be worse. (TOOTH ENAMEL IS IMPORTANT.)
Happy new year!
Dec 30, 2009
LOL, Piazza New York Catcher! Your family sounds awesome.
Dec 30, 2009
Okay, I'm just going to say it: I hate you right now for getting mac and cheese AND apple crumble for dinner. Those are two of my most favourite things and tonight I will probably be dining on vodka. And while, okay, yes, vodka IS also one of my favourite things - it just cannot compare to mac and cheese and apple crumble.
Might I bring up in retribution the fact that here in Australia we have a chain of cake stores called The Cheesecake Shop which sell AMAZING apple crumble cheesecakes? Yep. Apple crumble topping a delicious cheesecake. You really should have gotten some while you were over here, as it is you'll just have to hunt some shoddy US-equivalent out of the woodworks and berate yourself for mentioning macaroni and cheese to me when I'm hungry and thus incurring my wrath: you'll be haunted by the idea of apple crumble cheesecake and what could be for all of 2010.
Merry Christmas!

2009 - Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap, ending in approximately November and it has been Awesome ever since. I would like to remember this as the year of 3 Major Meltdowns, 4 Jobs, 5 Boyfriends, and a partridge in a pear tree...figuratively, of course.
Happy New Year!
xox

Oooh, I'm feeling hungry now.:-)
Happy New year.
Dec 30, 2009
The bad, I got laid off in April. The good, my wife is pregnant with our second child and due in a few weeks and I got a new job with a great company in August. So a bit of a mixed bag but on the whole better than it could have been.
Dec 30, 2009
2009 = No more Bush. Best year of the decade.
Dec 30, 2009
In keeping with my tradition of ALWAYS being out of step with the national experience, I had one helluva year. Like, possibly my best ever.
The thing I will probably remember the most though is my volunteer vacation to Peru.
Your family is so cute!
Dec 30, 2009
I love homemade mac and cheese but Noodles still has the best ever! My Christmas was great, I got engaged! So I thought of you often and how I should probably go read all your DIY wedding posts. :)
Dec 30, 2009
Great pictures - I love the one where Sean joins in with the madness!
I'll remember 2009 as the year that I got engaged and started grad school.
Dec 30, 2009
I couldn't help but notice that your "champagne" in the photo was actually Buck's Fizz (mimosa to us Yanks, but my English husband has trained me well). This struck me mainly because of copious amounts of the same that I consumed on Christmas day.
I'll remember 2009 as the year I visited my oldest and dearest friend, known since I was 4, after years too long living far across the country from her - and met her brand new daughter.
Happy New Year - roll on 2010!
Dec 30, 2009
It was baby year for us. The first, in fact. The cliche is true, it is completely life changing. Now I hope to figure out how to combine our passion for travel and adventure with the baby once she is a wee bit older.
Looks like your Christmas was fabulous!
Dec 30, 2009
De-lurking long enough to say that the pictures were beautifully done and that you seem to have a family that truly is happy. (And I wish I had gotten the genes your parents have... I'm jealous!)
Dec 31, 2009
Visiting Prague for Christmas and London for New Years! What a fabulous vacation with lots of memories and even more touristy photos!
Happy New Years Eve!!! (from London!)
Dec 31, 2009
2009 was the year of a brand new baby girl and all that came with her. I love her, but I can't help but hope that 2010 brings more sleep and less stomach ache (hers, not mine) - and loads of champagne once I stop breastfeeding.
Dec 31, 2009
My Christmas was fantastic - traditional British Christmas really. Lots of food, games after dinner, crap TV... good fun!!
2009 has been bloody awful for me, so I'll be ringing in 2010 with a smile on my face thankful that this year is over!!
Dec 31, 2009
I have a feeling that 2010 will be a great big year.
Technically, isn't this next year the one that we can all refer to you and Sean as newlyweds? That's a fun thing, maybe, to look forward to?
I'm sure the proper definition of 'newlywed' is in some etiquette book somewhere, in between the parts that say you have exactly one year from your wedding to get those thank you notes out, and that list of traditional anniversary gifts. The one that claims "paper" being a good gift after a year. Gaaah.
Dec 31, 2009
Beautiful pictures. I love crazy, not-afraid-to-put-our-personalities-out-there families like yours. Happy New Year!
Dec 31, 2009
That sausage meal looks absolutely glorious. Anyone who disses British food? I shall show them this photo. BOO-YA.
2009 was pretty good for me, but I'm greatly looking forward to 2010. My parents also moved close by this year, so for the first time in 8 years I'll be able to pop over regularly, or vice versa.
And my baby boy has morphed into a positively delightful toddler this year, which gives me great hope for the future.
Dec 31, 2009
Ohhh. It was a roller coaster whirwind of a year. And I seem to be heading up right now.
Wishing you the happiest of New Years. Looks like you're off to a great start!
Dec 31, 2009
I know you've had your bangs for several months now, but I just have to say they look absolutely fabulous in the photo above! They definitely suit you, and while you were considering growing them out, I think you should rock them for a few more months.
To answer your question, I will always remember 2009 as a hellacious year. This one hasn't been the best for me, but I'm taking the experiences and the lessons and moving forward. I have a good feeling about 2010.
Dec 31, 2009
2009 was the year that I followed my dream and moved to the west coast - Vancouver. It's my own little heaven on earth.
Your family looks like a lot of fun. Great pictures! Happy New Year to you all
Dec 31, 2009
Ahhhh! I bought an Eames office chair in apple green for Dustin's wedding gift. 5 years later, we still keep it at the breakfast table so we can look at it all day.
Happy New Year!
Dec 31, 2009
You know, 2009 was alright. It wasn't amazing, but I also kept my job and my apartment, and no one close to me died, so I really can't complain.
Dec 31, 2009
Whoooo - 2009 would have been good-if-not-great if it hadn't been for being the year my father decided to die.
He'd been ill for some time and had outlived his doctor's expectations by about four years, and I could almost believe it was his firm determination to see Bush out of the White House that kept him alive for so long. Afterward he just went downhill. However everything else - marriage, job, home, etc went beautifully, so it's been bittersweet.
I can tell you I've loved reading all about your wedding and I especially enjoy the pictures. Keep it up.
Dec 31, 2009
Your family is the prettiest, cutest family ever. Seriously.
Dec 31, 2009
honestly holly...at first glance, i thought your brother was ellen degeneres in that top picture!
how FUNNY! don't tell him i said that.
Dec 31, 2009
It was a hard, tough year, and I am SO! EXCITED! for 2010, but this was the year I had and therefore got to meet my son, so no matter what, it will always, always, always be my most favorite year of them all.
Also, you sure make a good case for a big family. What a cool bunch.
Dec 31, 2009
I LOVE Piazza, New York Catcher!
My 2009? I started "real" high school (10th grade), and I got my first boyfriend and first job, which led to me finally getting my first horse, and generally made a ton of plans and commitments for my future. Scary.
Dec 31, 2009
Message to SheLikesPurple - I am so intrigued by your comments about getting to meet your son. It sounds like the end of a long long journey, and quite wonderful in every way. Care to elucidate? If not, here's wishing you the very best.... and many happy years to come.
Jan 01, 2010
wow, and there i was feeling sorry that i haven't yet spent christmas with my boyfriend of two years. you sure did look like you had a fabulous one- but with that family i can't imagine you having any bad holidays together either. happy new year!
Jan 01, 2010
Beautiful beautiful family. Um, Holly,........the chair? Not one pic of the chair? Must see. Happy New Year.
Jan 02, 2010
While I had a great Christmas and New Year's Eve, I have to say that the thing that stands out most about 2009 is that it was just as crappy as 2008. Considering that my dad died in 2008, that's saying something.
Looking forward, the best thing about 2010 so far is that it isn't 2009! Yay! Progress!
Great pictures - now I have to go and see those desk chairs. I'm married, so I understand the excitement.
Jan 03, 2010
Well....
After checking out the desk chair, I have come to the conclusion that your idea of desk chair perfection and mine are like "tomato" and "tomahto".
I was all ready to drink in the gloriousness of a lush, plush antique chair with carvings and shiny dark wood. Which would be my idea of the penultimate desk chair.
Variety is the spice of life, eh?
Jan 04, 2010
Your family looks like SO MUCH FUN! If I wasn't already married, I'd seriously have to think about hooking up with one of your brothers... :D
Jan 04, 2010
I love the photos and like another commenter am hoping there is video of the sing-along! 2009 will be best remembered for my wedding and buying my first home. I so enjoyed following your wedding plans this year as well, all the best to you in 2010!
