By The Power Of Grayskull!

How old were you when you took your driving test? Sixteen, maybe? Seventeen or eighteen? My brother Tom took his yesterday. He's turning 27 in three months.

Luckily, he passed---can you imagine the humiliation of failing your driving test at 26, after you've been learning (on and off) for ten years? Way worse than failing at sixteen because you drove through a stop sign. Yeah, whatever, I drove through a stop sign the first time I took my driving test, don't make a big deal of it or anything. Come on! It was really hard to see where the line was!

Anyway, Tom passed his driving test, which was a nice little accomplishment to sneak in before the end of 2009, and so to celebrate, my mother made him the world's most awesome cake.

Yep, that's a He-Man cake. Yep, Tom is 26. Allow me to explain.

In the mid-eighties, my brother was obsessed with He-Man, like a lot of little boys in the mid-eighties were. He had bins and boxes full of He-Man action figures, and it was these bins and boxes of He-Man action figures that my mother---furiously nesting in the summer of 1989 before Luke and Susie were born that September---decided to donate to a local orphanage. Tom hadn't played with them in years, she reasoned, so someone else might as well enjoy them. And that was how Tom, my dad, and I returned to Hong Kong from England (my mother was too pregnant to fly so we'd taken the annual trip alone) to a spotless apartment, meticulously-arranged bedrooms, and....a large hole in the closet where Tom's bins and boxes of He-Man figures used to be.

Tom, as you can imagine, threw a fit.

"But you haven't played with them in years!" my mother protested.

It didn't matter, apparently. He loved those He-Man action figures. They were his He-Man action figures. He no longer owned Battlecat, Skeletor, or Man-At-Arms. HIS LIFE WAS RUINED. HE WOULD NEVER BE HAPPY AGAIN.

Tom got over it in about two weeks, but it has taken my mother more than twenty years to stop feeling guilty about throwing out his He-Man action figures. In fact, I still don't think she's stopped feeling guilty about it, and baking the He-Man cake is just another attempt to atone.

Of course, there's probably some lucky orphan in Hong Kong who's made an absolute fortune selling mint condition He-Man action figures on ebay for the last ten years---including some to my mother, I bet, who tried to buy back a few online a couple of Christmases ago---but you know what, that dude doesn't have a He-Man cake and a driver's license, does he?

Well, alright, then: he probably has the driver's license. Let's face it, he probably got it ten years ago.

My husband's still into action figures--I get him one every X-Mas. For real.

And he's 35. :O

So, in other words, Tom's love of He Man will not keep a woman from falling in love with him. Although she will tease him mercilessly, of course...

Yay Tom! I passed mine this year at 28 on my fourth try after learning on and off for eleven years. It's such a bloody relief. I got celebratory muffins, but I think the cake wins hands down.

Tell your mom that this is something Alison II would do also.

The moment something goes missing, Nathan turns to me with a stink eye and says, You threw it away, didn't you?!

Lately I say, No. After all, recycling something isn't throwing it away...

Yay Tom for getting his license!

Yay you for sharing with us that you failed before you passed - as my impending new year's resolutions hang over my head, it's nice to have a reminder that very together people do occasionally need to try more than once to get what they want.

And, yay for family stories; they're always my favorite.

I failed on my first attempt too...seems I was too tentative making a left turn at an intersection that now has a 4-way light on it. I figure I was just ahead of the trend.

Thanks for this post - I'm 21 and now feel a little bit less of a loser for not having my license yet!

Tom is way more accomplished than me. I am 29 and STILL don't have a driver's license. I took driving lessons about six years ago and never actually even got to drive through stop signs because I flunked the theory test. THREE times. (In my defense it was not in my first language and the questions where you have to decide which vehicle has right of way from birds eye view of crossroads used to give me a migraine).

OMG My brother was obsessed with He-Man too and we had the whole she-bang, the Greyskull Castle, He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, She-Ra, Battle cat and all the rest of them. We even had a record with the offical He-Man song on one side and the Beast Man song on the other! I can imagine poor Tom's pain when he discovered they were gone, but I think that cake more than makes up for it!
Also, I still haven't got round to taking my driving test and I'm 30 so way to go Brother Tom!

Tease all you want. Parents will twist themselves into a pretzel to make up for any wrongs their kids perceive. For all we know, in her mind, because he didn't have the power of Grayskull, he couldn't get it together to drive. (That's how we work...sad, but true.)

Congratulations Tom!!
And thanks to Tom and the other commenters who have made me feel like less of a freak for being 28 and not having a drivers license yet!
Every year I think "this is the year I drive by god!" and then I inevitably chicken out again.

best. cake. ever!
I got my drivers license when I was 22 and moved back to America. There's just no need for one in most places in England!

I think your brother is wearing a Red Sox shirt in that last photo which is just fabulous to see.

Congrats to him and love the cake!

I thought your brother was adorable in the first picture, then in the second picture I saw he's wearing a Red Sox t-shirt.

Which makes him utterly adorable.

A clear distinction, as you can see.

Kudos to your mom for an awesome cake! (Oh, and Tom's accomplishment is nothing to sneeze at, either!)

I generally find your writing very amusing, but this post was hilarious! I'm still giggling over the idea of the orphan selling the He-Man figures on eBay!

can i just say that your post caught my eye (even though I'm fighting my surf-the-web tendencies while we're home with family) because my husband has been buying He-Man toys online for our son recently? And the hunt is on for a Castle Grayskull in Gran and Granpa's attic.

Pretty funny. What is it about toys from the 80's, anyway?

Congrats to Tom!

So I passed my US driver's test over ten years ago... But am being forced to take a UK driving test in less than four weeks. Way nervous. Especially since everyone over here has this need to tell me how they failed their test 7 times before passing, and how much harder they are over here, and how I have about eight million bad habits that are going to get me FAILED.

That cake makes me love your mom more than ever. Also, there was a certain summer in the mid-'80s when I took to yelling about Grayskull and leaping off the back of the couch.

1. Best cake ever.

2. I continue to cling to the urban legend that He-Man was invented as an offshoot of the otherwise unmarketable Conan the Barbarian toys. Although it's been denied, I like the story.

3. I used to hide all of my valuables in the screw-off bottom of the lamp on my bedside table. When I got home from summer camp one year, my mom had redecorated my room, and the lamp had gone to Goodwill or some other stupid place like that. $50, pictures of girls I liked at school, and other bits of juvenile treasure. I'm still a bit pissed off.

Oh my word, I have to comment now. I've been reading your blog since almost 2years now and ever since your post about Tom's visit to you and Sean in SF I have a teeny tiny (none creepy) crush on him, so I finally have to admit it here:he is a cutie! and if i remember correctly wasnt he looking for a girlfriend in europe!? ;-D well I live in Heidelberg, Germany! So please tell him I said hi, k? thx! oh ja and congrats Tom! =)

We still have a He-Man comforter for a twin bed. If only I could find She-Ra to go with it, since I cannot get rid of it.

Valerie! How come you can't get anyone to take your He-Man comforter?? Name your price!

Like Holly said, I've been desperately trying to buy back all the He-Men stuff I so carelessly left on the steps of a Chinese orphanage back in the summer of 89. What was I thinking????

Seems to me we're handed a whole big bunch of guilt the minute the nurses lay our first baby in our arms, and it grows exponentially with each child. Do we ever stop beating ourselves up?

I try to placate them all from time to time with cakes. Stop gap solution!

Don't feel bad, brother Tom, I'm 30 and STILL haven't got round to taking the test. Of course, it IS getting to be a pain, but I figure, sooner or sooner, I'll do it. I just don't see the point in paying TRIPLE the rate for car insurance - and I never, ever drive, so there's nothing illegal about it. Plus; secret few know - they get you for jury duty via your DL. Sneaky buggers! LOVE the cake!

PS LOVE LOVE that your mom is Holly's mum

1. Fantastic cake & mom!

2. I failed my first driving test attempt IN THE PARKING LOT. The driver apparently felt that I should have yielded to another car in the parking lot, so he yanked the emergency brake and declared the test over.

3. My husband is 29 and still doesn't know how to drive. Annoying thing is, he doesn't drink, so he'd be the perfect designated driver! (I think that's part of why he continues to resist learning.)
