A Partial List Of Things The Rest Of The World Seems To Love And Yet Towards Which I Remain Curiously Lukewarm

* Sushi

* Star Wars

* Robert Pattinson

* Group dining

* Cetaphil

* Broth-based soups

* Engagement photos

* Don Draper (I prefer Pete Campbell)

* Margaritas

* Dancing With The Stars

* Tarte Cheek Stain

* Speaking in LOLcat

* Eat, Pray, Love

* Las Vegas

* Madonna

I mean, what am I missing here?

(And by the way, feel free to add your own.)

No, I'm with you on nearly every one of these. Except the margaritas, how can you not enjoy those? Tequila? Check. Delicious sweet/sour fruit juice? Check. What is not to enjoy?

I would however, like to add "Twilight" and all subsequent sequals to the list. I can't understand why any adult would want to read pop literature about angst-filled teen/vampires.
Perhaps however, I am just lukewarm because I spend my day TEACHING angst-filled teens who might also be terrifying monsters and would rather not read about them in my spare time.

Gasp! The word is spelled "sequels."
Apologies.

I'd like to know the story behind the bullet point "Engagement photos". Did someone ask you to take one, and you just couldn't be bothered?

Jun 09, 2009

I totally agree with you on everything EXCEPT the Don Draper issue. It's Don! Don Draper! Oh god, I'm giggling to myself even just thinking about him.

I also don't get engagement photos. It's a racket, I tell you, invented by the photographers of the world to sell you the wonderful experience of getting married. You can have a wonderful experience of getting married without all those shenanigans. Trust me- I did it, it's been three years, and I've never once thought to myself, "Gee, I wish I would have had some engagement photos done..."

Pffft. Pfffffft!

Jun 10, 2009

I'm with the previous commenter on the Twilight thing. I don't get it. Robert Pattison had a cuteness when he was doing the whole Harry Potter thing but Twilight/this whole vampire appeal, is entirely lost on me.

Eat, Pray, Love was a self absorbed, ridiculous waste of a book. I tried so very hard to love it and in the end I felt kind of used. Holly, you should write a travel book. It would be much more entertaining!

I'm adding :
- Summer (minus San Francisco apparently)
- Little dogs that yip a lot
- Suburbia
- Rachel Ray
- high heels (Oh flats how I love thee!)
- Oprah

Jun 10, 2009

Could have been my very own list, except for sushi and DON DRAPER. I can't even type his name without swooning. Get the smelling salts.

I was going to ask, "How can you possibly love Pete Campbell when he is so smarmy and evil and gross?" But then I remembered that Don Draper is, um, a cheating dog. And an absent father. And emotionally vacant in a way that borders on sociopathic. So... never mind that question, we'll both just go on pining after our fictional characters of choice.

I agree to all minus the margaritas. Its a tequila drink so I'm on board, AND its the only mixed drink my stomach will allow ;)

my additions:

Jennifer Connoly (sp?)

zac efron

american idol

tortilla wrap sandwiches

Sweet tea
Those horribly ugly bootie shoes that won't go out of style
Scarlett Johannsson

And you prefer Pete Campbell??? How are we even friends?!

Also, you know how I feel about Eat, Pray, Love. LOATHE.

Jun 10, 2009

I used to feel that way about engagement photos, but I keep seeing adorable and quirky engagement shots online and think they seem way more fun than wedding photos.

Pedicures
Twilight
Dan Brown
Diamonds (I agree with Anne of Green Gables)

Engagement photos are so Not Done on this side of the pond, maybe that's it.

May I also add:

- The Wire

Jun 10, 2009

haaha, that list made me chuckle, because we all have THINGS that we're supposed to like, but we dont! But here's my take:

* Sushi - It ALL depends on how fresh it is...I've had excellent nad only MEH Sushi.

* Star Wars - I know! I know!

* Robert Pattinson - When we were young, he'd have SO been in TigerBeat, but I guess I'm a little old for that now.

* Group dining - I know, I know!

* Cetaphil - I know, I know!

* Broth-based soups - If they have enough veggies in them...then it's worth it, but if not...MEH

* Engagement photos - I know, I know! Except those taken by Anna Kuperberg in SF

* Don Draper (I prefer Pete Campbell) - REALLY? Hmm...that perplexes me!

* Margaritas - Again, some are good, some are kinda bad....tough one.

* Dancing With The Stars - I know, I know!

* Tarte Cheek Stain - I don't even know what this is!

* Speaking in LOLcat - I know, I know!

* Eat, Pray, Love - Hmm..I kinda really liked this book...although i found it a bit indulgent...but I did dig it.

* Las Vegas - never been...BUT it intrigues me, in a social studies kind of way.

* Madonna - I know, I know!

I would add:

- those new strappy sandals that have ankle straps
- the Hills
- Adam Lambert

-10-page New Yorker articles about almost anything

I am right there with you on:

* Dancing With The Stars
* Eat, Pray, Love
* Las Vegas

Coincidentally, I'm off to Vegas this afternoon, although for the purpose of visiting my family (I grew up there).

Eat Pray Love? I hated nearly every page of it. What a waste of my life.

And LOLcat ceased to be funny freaking YEARS ago. Why must it still rage on?

I will keep my mouth shut on the Twilight issue (although I am no Robert Pattinson fan).

16
Alisa
Jun 10, 2009

Totally to Margaritas, Madona, Las Vegas and Dancing with the Stars. I just don't get it!

Also:

Dito to Twitter (I know you have one, and I would probably be addicted to it if I got one, but that's the point of why I remain tweet-less - It's everywhere though!)

Wearing Heals ALL THE TIME (Seriously? I applaud all of you women who can, but...)

Jump Suits, aka Rompers (They only look good on about 3% of the female population)

17

Jun 10, 2009

I agree with most of your list (excepting Robert Pattinson). I read maybe 40 pages of Eat, Pray, Love and I kept waiting for it to get better and it just got worse so I stopped reading it. I never stop reading a book.

I would add:
- American Idol
- Facebook (I have an account but the games and apps make no sense to me)

18

Jun 10, 2009

Pete Campbell?! Seriously...I have only seen Season 1, waiting for Season 2 on DVD...did he become less of a punkass bitch in Season 2 because he makes my skin crawl in Season 1.

one of the reasons I was so eager to leave san francisco was group dining. someone could write a book about how annoying it is to subsidize the drinking and appetizers gobbled up by people you hardly know when one of those assholes casually suggests we just "divide it 11 ways" when the check comes. hello, I ordered a $12 sandwich why am I paying $45?

I am down with everything on that list... I don't get ANY of it... except margaritas (I love the local version, li hing margaritas, in which the glass is rimmed with li hing powder, which you probably already know is salty, sweet, and sour at the same delicious time, and somehow it makes tequila palatable.

Broth-based-soup-disliking (er, lukewarming toward???) soul sister! My dislike extends to hot liquids in general, which has always sounded kind of dirty to me. But at least you maybe partially understand!

Also on my list:
*Camping
*Beer
*The Dave Matthews Band
*Dancing with the Stars

Jun 10, 2009

Real vampires do not sparkle. I am fond of paranormal books, etc. but that just irritates me to no end.

Star Wars pales in comparison to Star Trek. Ah, Captain Kirk, how I love thee. In both incarnations.

LOL speak is funny on the website because of the pictures. Talking like that? Are you 2? Seriously? You are pretending to talk like a cat that can't type? That's sad. Although I have picked up "Please to be my friend" from somewhere and can't figure it out.

Who is Don Draper/Pete Campbell?

I am stealing this for my blog as well.

Love Facebook. Hate Twitter.

40
Rachel
Jun 10, 2009

I would also add:
Women who wear their hair in pigtails
Julia Roberts

Completely agree on Eat, Pray, Love. I just read that Julia Roberts is starring in the film adaptation of that movie. That's a horrible double whammy to add to my list.

i agree with you on almost all of these - except for broth-based soups (filling without being bad for you), engagement pictures (can be fun and creative), and pete campbell over don draper (we're going purely on looks here. they are both smarmy).

Jun 10, 2009

I'm with you on pretty much all of those. I sat down to read Eat, Pray, Love last weekend and cut my losses after three chapters.

ack. sushi?!
broth based soups? does that mean like pho and ramen. b/c boy. MMMMMM.
and if you don't like sushi - you might like the giants roll (i think that's the name of it) at nama on king street. crab and salmon roll wtih cream cheese that's deep fried. i mean. amazing.

Mine would be:
Uggs.
Boot ankle shoes - cannot comprehend.
Frozen Yogurt. I mean it's EVERYWHERE.

Jun 10, 2009

Great list, Holly!

I have to add the following:

- Any soup. I'm hardly ever in the mood for soup. I don't understand the draw.

- I second Kat's reference to Uggs. Uggggly.

- Giant sunglasses.

- Victoria's Secret.

- I also agree with those who don't understand the attraction to high heels.

- I also don't get Star Wars, and I'd like to add Lord of the Rings.

- Sitting in a whirlpool tub for hours. I turn into a prune after about 10 min. Done. Don't know how people sit in there for an hour or 2.

- The Hills.

I'm sure there's more, but I'll stop there for now....

While I don't agree with your whole list, I do agree whole heartedly with some of it:
* Robert Pattinson
* Cetaphil
* Engagement photos
* Dancing With The Stars
* Tarte Cheek Stain (REALLY? I mean really -- how is that supposed to work? I tried it and I looked like a porcelain doll made up to look like a tart -- I don't think that is what Tarte had in mind)
* Speaking in LOLcat
* Las Vegas

To add my own:
>tanning beds or self tanner
>low rise pants - they are flatter on exactly .02% of the population
>renee zellweger
>jimmy fallon
>spending a $400 on a pair of jeans
>Uggs
>Crocs
>I Love New York and any of those really stupid VH1 shows
>Mushrooms *shiver*

I am sure I could go on forever, but I won't bore you.

You must read Drink, Pray, F##k by Andrew Gottlieb. If you don't quite get/despise Eat Pray Love you'll appreciate. Actually, you'll probably appreciate anyways because it's insanely funny.

Also, I don't get sushi, Twilight, Robert Pattinson (outside of his duties as Cedric Diggory), Jon & Kate + 8 (makes me stabby), yoga, whale tail (buy a belt), and people who add LOL to everything *they* write. I get it if someone else writes something that is LOL but Holy Hell - if you write it yourself and then add LOL...well...all I can say is Loser.

Also - you're right. Tarte cheek stain is great in theory but sucky in real life.

YES! I love it and am in full agreement with just about everything on your list, Holly.

- Panera Bread

Don Draper, really? He made your list? Sacrilege I say! (heard today that Season III of Mad Men starts in August)

I don't get:
Bruce Springsteen

People who cling to their 6th generation Irish heritage (my own relative included)

57

Jun 10, 2009

PETE CAMPBELL?!

Holly, I thought I knew ye! HMM, very interesting. Perhaps it's the way in which he emphatically yells "hell's bells, Trudy!" ...? I'm on team Don (lying, philandering, smooth-talking) Draper all the way.

I fervently agree re: lolcat. Drives me batty and makes people sound idiotic.

58

Jun 10, 2009

I've determined that most people who dislike Eat, Pray, Love are also people with whom I get along very well. It's my latest friend filter.

Also, DO NOT GET Robert Pattinson, at all.

Or ankle boots.
Or gladiator sandals.

59
Heather
Jun 10, 2009

I second Caroline's comment re: BeneFit BeneTint cheek stain. It is FAR superior to the Tarte stain. I don't know how I ever lived without it.

Cetaphil has been a lifesaver for me. I do not, on the other hand, understand people's obsession with the Philosophy skincare line. It does horrible things to my skin.

And THANK YOU for putting LOLcat on your list!! It irritates me so much that I've had to give up on certain websites/blogs that cannot seem to stop using it (MamaPop, I'm looking at you!).

60

Add to the list:

-Brad Pitt
-California
-Small Towns
-Side Swept Bangs (on me - they're fine on other people because since I'm not those other people I don't have to deal with their bangs in their face. I only have to deal with mine...and I'm ready for them to be grown out already. Grow hair - GROW!!!)

62

My list would include:

-Facebook quizzes or games or any of it
-Oprah

Felt good to get that off my chest, actually!

UGH, I am so over Rob Pattinson, not that I ever was so for him in the first place but I think you get my meaning. I haven't nor do I intend to ever read or see any of the Twilight franchise and I am TIRED of hearing about any of it. See also that perpetually stoned Stewart girl.

I totally agree with the majority of your list, as it happens, with the exception of Star Wars; it speaks to my geeky innards.

I agree with you on some, (engagement photos, margaritas) and some I can't believe my ears, Don Draper over Pete? I agree with your other commentor about the art director guy. Mine include
-Twitter
-LOST
-most reality shows that don't have clothing makeovers, BBC's Gordon Ramsay and two british ladies telling people how dirty they are.
-Heroes
-Dan Brown
-basically any movie/book/tv show that becomes a cultural phenomena

-Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt/Anjolina Jolie
-Banana Republic

Hi Holly - just started reading and really enjoying it!

I agree with you on the majority of these, but am so sad you don't enjoy sushi or margaritas. If I had my way in this world, they are all that would exist to consume. Delicious.

I don't get:

- The whole mis-matchy, 80s & 90s revival thing going on with clothes these days (add to that skinny jeans on guys)
- The appeal of celebrities "twittering"
- Jodi Picoult or Dan Brown
- Zombies being the new vampires

Oh God, I just realized that although I am REALLY excited about Robert Pattinson, this MAY make me a cougar. RAWR. I never got engagement photos and have not for a second regretted it. Gladiator sandals would top the list of things I do not understand and I'm very sorry but I would have to say that boyfriend jeans = do not get, at all.

69
Kate
Jun 11, 2009

Okay - I actually like engagement photos. In our wedding photos I'm wearing the big dress, my hair is curled and I've got makeup on. My husband is in a tux. They're great but they're not really 'us' in a lot of ways. In our engagement photos we're in jeans and my hair is down and we're hiking up a mountain. Those are the photos that I look at and think symbolize the rest of our life a lot better. That's what I've got on my desk at work. And for us, they were free. Came with the "package" we got from our photographer. They were a nice chance to get to know him before the wedding and see how we all got along.

I can't believe I forgot:

potatoes (they have no flavor and the texture is nothing to write home about. They are a WASTE unless used as a device to convey cheese into my mouth)

low rise

boot cut jeans/trousers

As for margaritas, it totally depends. Most are too sweet, and the whole slushy adult beverage thing feels all-too playing at being a grownup to me. But a mix that's a touch more tart than sweet, on the rocks, no salt can be absolutely delicious.

71
CarrieLyn
Jun 11, 2009

I totally agree - except for sushi and margaritas!

And, I'm so sorry, but I have to add "Slumdog Millionaire." I mean it was good, but the hype around it was the equivalent of it being seriously overplayed before I could see it.

Love this post = I think about things like this all the time.

So glad someone mentioned American Idol - that show is so annoying!

More to add:
* The movie E.T.
* Email Forwards - I mean who REALLY still sends those? (my grandma, that's who)
* Clothing/Shoes/Purses with the logo all over them - Coach, LV, etc.
* Bachlorette Parties
* Buffets - ick

(But I do love sushi and high heels)

Ewwwww. Pete Campbell? He is one of my most hated TV characters of all time. I just want to throw things at his head the whole time he's onscreen. And I don't think he's attractive, either.

Don, well, I can understand why the ladies love Don. But he is not really my type.

74

Jun 11, 2009

I agree with you on most of those, though I do enjoy a well made margarita. My list would also include:

- skinny jeans
- huge sunglasses
- The Beastie Boys (actually, I'm not luke warm, I hate them. Hate. What they do is not music, it is annoying, hyperactive boys screaming into a microphone.)
- whiskey
- Zack Efron
- Miley Cyrus

While I've been reading Bonfires for months, this is my first post.

Things I LOVE but HOW CAN YOU NOT?!:
--Sushi (wasabi! ginger!)
--Margaritas (salty! tart!)
--Cetaphil (gentle! low maintenance!)

Things I DO NOT LOVE, EITHER:
--Star Wars (a bit..lost on me)
--Las Vegas (why?)
--Dancing With the Stars (huh?)

To your question, other things I DO NOT LOVE OR UNDERSTAND:
--Blue cheese (does it not taste rotten to anyone else?!)
--SUPER runny eggs (poached, sunny side up, etc. etc...ugh!)
--Milk (creamy, opaque)

Why all food? Food is my favorite and I JUST don't understand these things!

Madonna should be excommunicated; possibly executed.

Lets all thank her for setting the feminist movement back by about nine decades.
